FRANK SALVATO: AVERTING OBAMA’S ATTEMPT TO ANNIHILATE THE GOP
There has been a lot of talk since the re-election of President Obama about his ability, nay desire; his goal, of “annihilating” and “destroying” the Republican Party. If one listens to the mainstream media, some of their Obama-friendly operatives are openly declaring that the only way Mr. Obama can “cement his legacy” is if he succeeds in his goal of destroying the GOP. And now, evidently, our own leader in the House of Representatives, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), has concluded that Mr. Obama is on a quest to “annihilate the Republican Party.” Truth be told, after the party’s selection of the last two presidential candidates, and their performance on fiscal issues, I’d say the leadership of the GOP – both elected to office and not – have done a pretty good job of destroying the party brand all by themselves.On January 19th, 2013, CBS political director (I didn’t know unbiased news organizations would have a need for such a position) John Dickerson wrote about President Obama’s second term agenda in his column for the Progressive-leaning Slate Magazine. In it he opined:
“The challenge for President Obama’s speech is the challenge of his second term: how to be great when the environment stinks. Enhancing the president’s legacy requires something more than simply the clever application of predictable stratagems. Washington’s partisan rancor, the size of the problems facing government, and the limited amount of time before Obama is a lame duck all point to a single conclusion: The president who came into office speaking in lofty terms about bipartisanship and cooperation can only cement his legacy if he destroys the GOP. If he wants to transform American politics, he must go for the throat…
“Obama’s only remaining option is to pulverize. Whether he succeeds in passing legislation or not, given his ambitions, his goal should be to delegitimize his opponents. Through a series of clarifying fights over controversial issues, he can force Republicans to either side with their coalition’s most extreme elements or cause a rift in the party that will leave it, at least temporarily, in disarray.”
Set aside, for a moment, the notion that this is coming from the “political director” of a news media organization that, by virtue of its First Amendment protections, is supposed to be non-partisan and unbiased (I know, it’s rather hard given the glaring partisanship). What Mr. Dickerson wrote – and, incredibly, has defended – is actually at the heart of every Progressive, both in elected office and not. Their goal isn’t to meet in the middle; to compromise; to affect government that is good for all the people of the United States. Their goal is to “destroy,” to “pulverize” the opposition; to eliminate anyone and any faction that opposes their agenda. Anyone who still believes that Mr. Obama’s aim is to be that of a “uniter,” a pragmatist or someone who wants to meet the ideologically opposed on common ground to achieve compromise, is either a political novice or severely challenged intellectually. Either way, their knowledge of the political realities in play is so outside the realm of reality that they have become enablers for a group that wants to “fundamentally transform the United States of America.”
And while most of the people I engage with on a daily basis – people who take their responsibility to defend and protect the Constitution as if it were actually a covenant between the people and those who serve them in government; who actually provide governmental oversight the way the Founders and Framers envisioned and trusted future generation would – have understood the ruthlessness of the Progressive Movement for years, if not decades, it would seem our elected leadership in the Republican Party are just getting around to understanding the seriousness of our predicament.
In a speech to the Ripon Society on January 22nd, 2013, House Speaker John Boehner said:
“Given what we heard yesterday about the president’s vision for his second term, it’s pretty clear to me that he knows he can’t do any of that as long as the House is controlled by Republicans. So we’re expecting over the next 22 months to be the focus of this administration as they attempt to annihilate the Republican Party.
“And let me just tell you, I do believe that is their goal – to just shove us into the dustbin of history.”
As is heard in many evangelical churches on Sunday mornings across the land, “Praise the Lord! He has seen the light!”…It would have been nice if Mr. Boehner would have “seen the light” five years ago when everyone in the new media was providing documented facts about Mr. Obama’s radical ties and agendas; his “revolutionary” mentors, allies and fellow travels. But then we were called conspiracy theorists and alarmists. We were told to give the man a chance, even as some of us – myself paramount among this group – tried in vain to explain the mindset of Chicago politicians and the dangers of Chicago’s Progressive Movement in politics. All we heard from the establishment GOP…crickets.
People need to understand some irrefutable facts. If we – those who have a love of country above love of party; who believe that the Charters of Freedom must be defended for future generations; who believe we should not acquiesce to the “fundamental transformation of America” – want to avoid the experience of witnessing the demise of the dreams held by our Founders and Framers, we have to accept some plain truths and resign ourselves to simple but effective actions.
First, Progressives exist on both sides of the aisle. They can be identified by their unyielding quest for small-group power, otherwise referred to as “elitist oligarchical power.” If you think Progressives haven’t either risen to the upper echelons of the Republican Party or influenced its workings then you missed the charade that was spun as an official vote addressing a rules change for how the National Republican Party functions (read more here).
If we are to right the whole of the political system in the United States, those who believe in the brilliance of the Charters of Freedom must get off the couches, turn off the televisions and invest our time into not only expunging Progressives from our political parties – both Republican and Democrat, we must retake the school boards locally and within them the curriculum committees in an effort to retake our schools. With news that school districts across the country are contemplating the complete removal of civics from curriculums, we are just a generation away from a society completely devoid of the philosophical understanding of liberty.
Second, and because Progressives have risen through the ranks to influential positions within the establishment Republican Party, the GOP has run two successive candidates for President that have abdicated the core and founding principles of the Republican Party circa 1856: Limited government, equitable and limited taxation, a strong defense, and colorblind equal opportunity for all, to name but a few.
If we as a party – the Republican Party – are to survive the efforts of Progressives to “destroy” and “annihilate” the GOP we must not only resist their efforts to divide and conquer, we must jealously re-commit ourselves to the founding tenets of the party. That the National GOP is just now – after two national election losses in a row, and after flipping-off the TEA Party that presented to them the US House of Representatives in 2010 – getting around to giving a damn about what the rank-and-file thinks, should not only infuriate the political foot soldiers, it should move rank-and-file members to remove the total of leadership from office.
Third, the Conservative Movement has been hobbled by the notion that social issues can be addressed through legislation, championing them openly and, therefore, creating an ideological shooting gallery for Progressives who bear no similar burden. In doing so, Conservatives fall prey to the Progressive tenet that mandates government as the answer to societal woes.
Newsflash for all of the Social Conservatives out there: Government is not the answer to combatting social issues. The hard, one-on-one work of changing the hearts and minds of the individual members of the community; of our society is the only way to eradicate societal ills. It can be done. Progressives achieved their goals to date by doing just that. So, stop making social issues the cross any political party bears…in doing so you surrender to the Progressive Movement.
Fourth, Barack Obama and his Progressive supporters, with a winning vote total of 62,615,406 votes – equating to just 25.9 percent of our nation’s 240,926,957 voting age citizens (compared to 24.5 percent for Mr. Romney), falsely claim a mandate to run roughshod over the rights of an overwhelming majority of the nation’s citizens by virtue of voter apathy.
This is the big one.
With only 53.6 percent of the eligible population voting in national elections, Conservatives must stop wasting their time debating the 25.9 percent of the population that worships at the foot of the Progressive Movement’s altar and concentrate exclusively on the non-voting 46.4 percent of the eligible population, educating them on not only the issues but on the philosophies of liberty and freedom, the true benefits of Capitalism, the dangers of the cancerous Progressive ideology and motivating them to being good citizens; citizens who understand and appreciate the Charters of Freedom – who are constitutionally literate, and who are willing to not only protect the Charters but be evangelical in their appreciation of them.
If true Conservatives – those who are willing to give of themselves for the good of the country – can reach just 10 percent of the 46.4 percent of the eligible non-voting population, well, suffice it to say the Republican Party – and along with it the Conservative Movement – would be far from “pulverized.”
So, while Progressives salivate over the demise of their opposition – just like their Marxist and Socialist brethren have done throughout history, the truth is that the reports of the “annihilation” of the Republican Party are greatly exaggerated. But, it is up to you – not the National GOP or the special interest activists of the Right side of the aisle, you – to save the future. Do so by using facts, by talking to your friends and family who do not vote and by avoiding the “debate trap” set for Conservatives by the Progressive Movement. It can be done…just ask the Founders.
