The military policy of the United States has been governed by altruism since at least World War I, when Herbert Croly, the proto-fascist and Progressive writer, advocated that America involve itself in that war as a “tonic of a serious moral adventure.” The shocking news is that, if an American soldier murdered sixteen Afghani citizens in cold blood, it is a direct consequence of that policy.
The messianic President Wilson could not pass up what he saw as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help remake the world. As historian Arthur Ekirch writes in The Decline of American Liberalism, “The notion of a crusade came naturally to Wilson, the son of a Presbyterian minister, imbued with a stern Calvinist sense of determinism and devotion to duty.” He was goaded by a host of Progressive intellectuals, such as John Dewey and Herbert Croley, editor of The New Republic, who wrote that “the American nation needs the tonic of a serious moral adventure.”

I first posted this heart-warming April 1945 photograph of Canadian-liberated Zwolle, Netherlands last year. I’m posting it again because the point I raised then is at least as relevant today, particularly in light of the tragic and completely aberrational incident in which an Army Staff Sergeant apparently walked off base and shot and killed t6 Afghan civilians.
Last year, I wrote:
Between 1940 and 1945, 128 known air raids were carried out by Allied forces on German-occupied Rotterdam in the Netherlands, killing 884 civilians and wounding 631. I mention this wondering whether Admiral Mullen ever ponders just why it was that Allied Forces in Europe were greeted as liberators in a war that caused millions of civilian casualties.
Just to underscore: that figure includes millions of civilian casualities caused by Allied Forces. How do Bush and Obama and Mullen and Kilcullen and Petraeus and McChrystal and now John R. Allen, the current commanding general in Afghanistan, explain the welcome Allied forces received across Europe in 1945 despite the massive suffering and death the Allies, too, inflicted? The answer is that the liberated peoples rejected the Nazis and their ideology. So why doesn’t the same logic work on “liberated” Afghans? Maybe they don’t reject either the Taliban or their ideology. Maybe there’s just way too much overlap on both counts.

Syria Debate: I Didn’t Miss the Totalitarian Angle; I Wrote the Book On It
There is not much with which to argue in Michael’s last salvo, but I do think I’m entitled to grouse a bit.
The subtitle of my last book (The Grand Jihad), which Michael has been characteristically kind in praising, is “How Islam and the Left Sabotage America.” My central thesis is that, while there have been periods of militant Islamic supremacism as long as there has been Islam, the most recent iteration is uniquely threatening due to two factors. First is the propagation of fundamentalist ideology by the unimaginable oil wealth of a few Islamic countries (mostly Saudi Arabia), amplified by the unprecedented communications capabilities of our age. Second is the alliance between Islamic supremacism and the revolutionary Left.
As Michael will recall, I took no small amount of guff over this, particularly from my usual allies on the Right. Some of it was just uninformed — the sort of thing you get from people who’ve heard that a provocative argument has been made but haven’t bothered to familiarize themselves with it (Are you saying Obama is a covert Muslim? That Obama wants to impose sharia law? That Obama supports al-Qaeda?). Some of it was the craven preening that has become too familiar: The opposition, having been nailed, is certain to fight back with its bread-and-butter, character assassination; so the brave conservative pundit — posing as Bill Buckley purging the Birchers — shows how thoughtful and nuanced he can be by fretting over the “Islamophobia” and ideological “extremism” he perceives in the suggestion that one’s political adversaries sympathize with the nation’s enemies. And finally, some of it was strategic: Many on the Right are, alas, heavily invested in the Islamic democracy project; I counter that this enterprise is not only a national-security mirage but a means by which the progressives who dominate U.S. foreign policy (in the State Department, the military brass, the intelligence community, and elsewhere in government) export not our constitutional culture of individual liberty but their preference for Big Government. (Three years ago, I wrote about “democracy building” as a pretext for spreading statism, after reading commanding general Stanley McChrystal’s outline of what I saw — and see — as the tragically flawed U.S. mission in Afghanistan.)

How to Get Elected in the Palestinian Territories

In our Palestinian culture, it is much more important if one “graduates” from an Israeli prison than from the most prestigious university in the world.
It is not clear at this stage when and if new presidential and parliamentary elections will ever be held in the Palestinian territories: The two major Palestinian parties, Fatah and Hamas, have yet to end their power struggle and agree on the formation of a Palestinian unity government that would pave the way for long overdue elections.
But if anyone is hoping that the elections will see the rise of moderate and charismatic leaders to power, then he is living in an illusion. In our Palestinian culture, it is more important if one “graduates” from an Israeli prison than from the most prestigious university in the world.
In our society, people like Prime Minister Salam Fayyad do not get many votes because they did not spend time in an Israeli prison. Fayyad’s chances of winning would be higher if he had killed a Jew or sent his son to carry out a suicide bombing in Israel.

How a notorious anti-Semitic order changed the course of Jewish life in America—ultimately, for the better.
On Dec. 17, 1862, as the Civil War entered its second winter, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant issued the most notorious anti-Jewish official order in American history: “The Jews, as a class violating every regulation of trade established by the Treasury Department and also department orders, are hereby expelled from the department within twenty-four hours from the receipt of this order.” Known as General Orders No. 11, the document blamed Jews for the widespread smuggling and cotton speculation that affected the area under Grant’s command. That area, known as the “Department of the Tennessee,” stretched from northern Mississippi to Cairo, Ill., and from the Mississippi River to the Tennessee River. Grant ordered Jews expelled from every inch of it and warned that “any one returning … will be arrested and held in confinement until an opportunity occurs of sending them out as prisoners.” Lest anyone try to change his mind, Grant made clear that “no passes will be given these people to visit headquarters for the purpose of making personal application for trade permits.”
Americans today are often surprised to learn that Ulysses S. Grant once expelled “Jews as a class” from his war zone. It seems incredible that he could blame Jews for the sins of smugglers and traders—most of whom were not actually Jewish at all—and expel them from the entire territory under his command. Some Jews at the time wondered whether their new homeland was coming to resemble anti-Semitic Europe at its worst.
In the end, only a small number of Jews were seriously affected by General Orders No. 11. Within hours of its issuance, Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest staged a daring raid that tore up rail and telegraph lines around Grant’s headquarters at Holly Springs, Miss. The resulting breakdown in communications meant that news of General Orders No. 11 spread slowly.
