MY SAY: GRANNIE GETS A NEW CAR

This past weekend I set off to lease a new car. I knew exactly the make, the model and the trim that I wanted. Since Google does what it does, I was contacted by many dealers with a variety of incentives. I chose the one with the best deal in a low-end business corridor in the East Bronx.
When I arrived, the concierge called me “mami” and directed me to Steve, from Ghana, who called me “nana” and took me to Ramon in sales who informed me that his grandmother has the car which is best for old people. My salesperson whose white beard and cane indicated more senior status told me that his mother in law has the same car. (?)
The sales manager Sal groaning and pretending to suffer because he was taking a hit told me that the reason he accepted my offer is that I reminded him of his great aunt Ruth.
During the tedious wait for the new registration, license plate transfer, and servicing, every single person on the staff offered me coffee, donuts, a sandwich, a more comfortable chair- in several variations of the word “mother.” Ah, the perks of superannuation. They could not have been kinder.
When my spiffy new vehicle was ready, they helped me adjust settings and preferences and pair my cell phone and navigation. They all offered admonitions about driving safely and when I pulled out, they shouted “goodbye and God bless you!”
I did not just get a new car. I feel as if I got a gift that gives the lie to the media’s continual and disturbing claims that racial and ethnic relations among Americans are terrible. RSK

MY SAY: BDS- BOYCOTT, DIVEST AND SANCTIONS AGAINST AMERICA?

We hear a great deal about the BDS movement whose malevolent goal is delegitimizing Israel.

Here in our own United States, there is an equally malevolent and growing movement to delegitimize our most valued institutions, our history, our monuments, our language, our laws, our legislature, our freedoms of speech and thought and assembly, our national culture, and our sovereignty.

Institutions and individuals are sanctioned and boycotted for perceived offenses against gender and race. Our grammar is altered to erase gender. Our immigration laws and national security are challenged by demanding open borders and offering sanctuary to those who break the laws. History is rewritten to paint America as a racist society instead of a beacon of democracy.

These attacks and libels used to germinate in academia and mainstream liberal media, but now they are prevalent in entertainment, social media and politics as well. As columns on education demonstrate, they even appear in early childhood education.

The late Jeanne Kirkpatrick lamented the “blame America first” crowd and the Presidency of Ronald Reagan seemed to quell the impulse to bash and libel our nation. However, behind the scenes “community organizers” were plotting the revival of the radical left which is back with a vengeance. In their effort to destroy the presidency of Donald Trump, even legislators and candidates now openly slander and libel our nation. Rsk.

MY SAY: ABOVE AND BENEATH THE LAW

The left is always in high dudgeon. After the Mueller soap opera, the hue and cry was  ” no one is above the law.” The no one referenced is the President. Natch.

What about those millions of illegal residents and the “sanctuary” groupies, including legislators who advocate and abet breaking immigration laws?

I guess they are beneath the law…..rsk

MY SAY: THE WHITE HOUSE VERSUS THE LOWER HOUSE

I am beginning to think that Congress is very appropriately named “The Lower House.”

In the latest brouhaha President Trump tweeted that “progressive Democrat congresswomen “should “go back” to their countries of origin to fix the corruption plaguing those nations before they lecture the United States.

If the President’s tweet was lame, Pelosi’s response was more so. She swiftly responded that the issue proved that the President wants to “make America white again.”

The “squad” Ilhan Omar, Ayana Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, are the only four Democrats in the House who voted against the border funding bill who provocatively denounce the Democrats who voted for it. Their public remarks are anti-Trump, anti-cauliflower (Cortez) anti-Israel and Jews and not so veiled primary threats against more establishment Democrats. This occasioned critical comments from Nancy Pelosi. The response? Pelosi is a racist.

Racism…. that’s the new meme in the lower House.

On Sunday the intelligence-light Representative Ben Ray Lujan (D- New Mexico District 3) and recently named Assistant House Speaker, was asked about immigration, and Trump, and the hostilities between Pelosi and the squad, and he mentioned racism against “people of color” in all his answers.

And now the squad is invoking the other persistent meme…. impeachment for racism…A new low for the lower house..rsk

MY SAY: THE CUSTODIANS OF DEMOCRACY

In 1969 my husband and I bought a pre-revolutionary house. While a kitchen and plumbing and electricity were obviously added, the original structure, inside and out were intact.  After one really harsh Connecticut winter when I contemplated certain restorations and changes, my late husband, the finest and most thoughtful person told me. “We must be cautious about changes…. we are not only owners…. we are custodians of a bit of history.”

His words echo when we celebrate patriotism and legacy in America. We are the custodians of the democracy crafted by our extraordinary founders. Some changes are always necessary and flaws must be fixed by discussion and legislation, but the basic tenets of our freedom and the right to vote and the laws that provide homeland security must always be guarded and protected, and they are being vigorously challenged.

The right to dissent is both a privilege and an obligation of our custody of democracy. But, there is no right to threaten and beat journalists; there is no right to censor those with whom we disagree; there is no right to assume power and challenge the legitimacy of an election by violence and libel;  there is no right to threaten national security by demanding open borders and giving sanctuary to those who break the law.

My rather gloomy mood was lifted by the President’s speech and military displays on July 4th,  when I saw thousands upon thousands of Americans who braved the blistering heat waving our flag and cheering for America and our defense forces.

They are the custodians of democracy. May patriotism always prevail….rsk

The compliant and biased media lobbed no real questions on present defense or foreign policy and cagily deflected serious questions on national security and immigration.

Did you notice that any real discussions on national defense, foreign policy,  China, North Korea, Russia, the Middle East and other “hot spots” were  absent at last night’s debate?

MY SAY: BRANDYWINE VALLEY- PENNSYLVANIA AND DELAWARE AND THE DU PONTS

I just spent delightful days in the Brandywine Valley driving through the beautiful countryside. Included were visits to the Brandywine River museum which features paintings by three generations of the Wyeth family and their acolytes, the magnificent American antique furniture and woodland gardens of the former home of Henry Francis Du Pont- Winterthur Museum, and Longwood Gardens which defies description with one thousand acres of woodlands, flower gardens, ancient specimen trees of every variety, fountains, water gardens and a Conservatory that is dazzling with its almost endless displays of plants, trees and flowers.
All of the foregoing were a sampling of the generosity and public spirit of the Du Pont family, whose largess contributed and continues to contribute to conservation and restoration and maintenance of American historical treasures.
It also evoked a personal recollection of the Du Ponts. My husband’s brother in law was a very accomplished PhD in chemistry who worked for Du Pont de Nemours in Wilmington in the 1950s. It was bruited that a Jew could sooner become President of America than a president of Du Pont. At the time there were many institutions and academies with anti-Semitic policies so I did not pay too much attention.
Years later in 1974, I heard that expression again about anti-Semitism at Du Pont at a dinner sponsored by the Weizmann Institute of Israel. It was repeated with much humor by the guest of honor Irving Saul Shapiro who was the first non-Du Pont family member to be appointed CEO of the company in 1973 where he remained until 1981.
That is what I love about this country. Injustice and prejudice towards minorities and women have been overturned by the principles of democracy and not by thugs like Antifa and so-called “justice warriors.” God truly shed his grace on America the beautiful…..rsk
