Three people were stabbed in an attack that British police said they are treating as a terrorist incident.

LONDON—Three people were stabbed in a London underground station Saturday night, in an attack that British police said they are treating as a terrorist incident.

The attack, about 7 p.m., left one person with serious, but not life-threatening, stab wounds, and two others with minor wounds, the police said in a statement.

The police arrested a male suspect at the station.

“We are treating this as a terrorist incident,” Commander Richard Walton, who leads the Metropolitan Police’s counterterrorism force, said in the statement.

The U.K. remains on high alert after terrorist attacks in Paris left 130 dead last month. London has been the target of a number of terrorist attacks, including the stabbing–and attempted decapitation–of a soldier in the city in 2013 and the 2005 bombing of the city’s transport system. The government says its intelligence services have thwarted a number of terror attacks this year.

Social media accounts and British media reports said a man shouted “this is for Syria” before lunging at people in the station at Leytonstone, in East London.

These accounts could not be immediately verified and the Metropolitan Police did not immediately return calls seeking further comment.

At midnight, the station was still cordoned off by police tape with police officers standing outside.

Leytonstone is a mainly low-income residential area with a large immigrant population from Asia and Eastern Europe. The station is not close to any of London’s tourist, retail or entertainment districts. On Saturday night, before the attack, the station was busy with groups of young people heading into central London for a night out.

A spokeswoman for Downing Street said, “There is an ongoing police investigation into tonight’s attack in London. We are monitoring the situation closely as further details emerge.”
