Iran Briefly Detained, Seized Travel Documents of UN Nuclear Inspector By Mairead McArdle

https://www.nationalreview.com/news/iran-briefly-detained-seized-travel-documents-of-un-nuclear-inspector-report/

Iran last week briefly detained and seized the passport of an inspector for the United Nations nuclear watchdog, a significant demonstration of non-compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal.

The female inspector was detained at the Natanz nuclear facility and her travel documents confiscated by Iranian officials, Reuters reported. Iran has confirmed it held up an inspector, blocking her from accessing the Natanz site over concerns that she was carrying “suspicious material.”

International Atomic Energy Agency officials familiar with the situation described Iran’s actions as harassment. More than 130 inspectors are commissioned by the IAEA to inspect Iran’s nuclear facilities and ensure they comply with the terms of the nuclear deal. Under the agreement, Iran is required to provide inspectors with “regular access, including daily access as requested by the IAEA, to relevant buildings at Natanz.”

Will Boris Johnson Strike a Deal with Nigel Farage? By John O’Sullivan

https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/11/will-boris-johnson-strike-a-deal-with-nigel-farage/

If he doesn’t, the Tories could be in trouble in the general election.

So how do things stand in the United Kingdom now that the Remain Parliament has finally been consigned to the dustbin of history and an election called for December 12? Well, there is the usual airy talk on both sides of the political divide about how the forthcoming U.K. election can’t simply be about Brexit but must instead cover a wide range of political questions. In a purely formal sense, that’s true: The parties will publish manifestos with policies on everything from the National Health Service to global warming.

But the wider truth is that this election will be almost entirely about Brexit because the nation’s sovereignty, for which Brexit is a code word, is what enables Parliament to determine legislation and government policy across the board. Those who oppose Brexit (i.e., U.K. sovereignty) do so either because they think that the EU would pursue particular policies more to their taste or because they have already transferred their allegiance to Brussels, now identify their interests with the EU’s more or less fully, and are therefore happy that it should decide everything.

That’s big stuff, bigger than most of the issues over which the parties traditionally divide, and as a result the parties have started to divide more over Brexit than over other domestic issues. In fact on those other issues all three (or at least two-and-a-half) U.K. national parties increasingly sound like different wings of a single Social Revolutionary party devoted to diversity, massive spending, and larger and more caring government, while differing only on how (or whether) to pay for it. Boris Johnson, for instance, just announced his government will ban “fracking,” which puts him aboard the Green Express alongside all other parties in rejecting the second coming of North Sea Oil — of which, until now, most Tories have been enthusiastic advocates. Johnson also distributes other people’s money with all the panache of a drunken leader of the Labour party.

How Putin Outfoxed Trump, Pence and Erdogan by Malcolm Lowe

https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/15121/putin-outfoxed-trump-pence-erdogan

President Donald Trump claimed the entire credit for this outcome. But in reality it was the culmination of a scheme that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been planning since at least January 2019.

The drama of recent weeks began with joint Turkish-US patrols along the Syrian side of the border and ended with joint Russian-Turkish patrols. This switch already indicates who intimidates Erdogan and who does not.

Above all, the “Joint U.S.-Turkish Statement” nowhere defined the length or even the depth of the “safe zone,” allowing Erdogan to understand it to mean – as in the various Turkish statements at the UN – the entire length of the border and a variable depth enabling the settlement of one or two or three million Islamist Syrian refugees.

Assad and Putin may be scheming to recapture Afrin in same style as they have used to regain most of western Syria, namely, Assad regime infantry backed by heavy Russian bombing. Only this time the SDF will be available to serve as infantry.

Note the opinion of Robert Pearson, a former US Ambassador to Turkey, speaking on Middle East Forum Radio on October 23, that “Sooner or Later, Putin Will Force Turkey out of Syria.”

On October 17, brandishing President Donald Trump’s threat to destroy the Turkish economy, US Vice President Mike Pence visited Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Feigning a spirit of compromise, Erdogan agreed on a memorandum with Pence that effectively gave Erdogan the green light to complete his ethnic cleansing of the Syrian Kurds.

On October 22, Erdogan went to visit Russian President Vladimir Putin. This time, Erdogan feigned full satisfaction with a joint memorandum that limited his ethnic cleansing to an Arab-majority stretch of Syrian territory adjacent to the Turkish border, where few Kurds live anyway, while conceding the protection of all other Syrian Kurds to Putin.

Trump claimed the entire credit for this outcome. But in reality it was the culmination of a scheme that Putin had been planning since at least January 2019, when he promoted a meeting between representatives of the Syrian Kurds and of the Assad regime.

In short, the two meetings ended with the US administration claiming its strategic wisdom precisely as it surrendered its former substantial influence in Syria and established Russian supremacy in Syria. Before we examine the details, however, a brief geography lesson is needed.

Should Europe Bring Back the Fighters Who Left for ISIS? by Alain Destexhe

https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/15118/europe-return-isis-fighters

This debate about repatriation is another example of how confused the West has become when trying to apply its moral principles. The real victims here are the people who were murdered, injured, raped, tortured or displaced by ISIS. Their children, if still alive, will have to live with the consequences of ISIS terror.

If European governments have to choose between supporting a Yazidi rape survivor and her unwanted child or a woman who willingly left Europe to spit in the face of Western societies and the values of her country of origin to join ISIS, they should choose the former. Sorry, do-gooders. These deserters should not be allowed back to Europe.

After the Turkish offensive into Syria, European governments are confronted again with the thorny problem of what to do with the “foreign fighters”.

Foreign fighters are Muslim extremists who left their countries of residence to join ISIS and fight against Western civilization and values. Most of them are men, but many women joined them to support the Caliphate. Many of these women later became pregnant with the children of ISIS terrorists.

Since the fall of Mosul and Raqqa, most of the surviving fighters are currently being detained in Iraqi or Kurdish jails. Some are also in detention in northern Syria, a territory whose future is uncertain. Most women (and their children) live in refugee camps, often in miserable conditions.

Advanced Israeli missile fell into Russian hands, reports say

https://worldisraelnews.com/advanced-israeli-missile-fell-into-russian-hands-reports-say/?utm_source=browser&utm_medium=push_notification&utm_campaign=vwo_notification_1573026617&vwo_powered=1

A David’s Sling interceptor has fallen into Russian hands, reports say.

A complete, undamaged state-of-the-art Israeli missile has been in the hands of the Russian military since 2018, it emerged on Wednesday, according to a Chinese news site.

The website Sina says that the interceptor landed unharmed in Syrian territory, was located by Syrian forces and transferred to Russian hands.

On July 23, 2018, Israel launched two interceptors from its new David’s Sling anti-missile system in response to the launch of two OTR-21 Tochka missiles. Tochka is a Soviet-era surface-to-surface missile.

When it was determined that the Russian missiles would not enter Israeli air space, one of the David’s Sling interceptors was detonated by the IDF. But the second fell virtually undamaged into Syrian territory when it missed its target.

According to the Chinese report, immediately after it fell, Syrian military were dispatched to retrieve it. It was then taken to a Russian-Syrian base, and from there flown to Moscow, where its technology would be examined with an eye to reverse engineering its advanced components.

If the report is accurate, it would be a major blow to Israel’s efforts to maintain its qualitative military edge in the region. Ironically, it was the first time that Israel had employed its David’s Sling system.

Nigel Farage Goes Nuclear on Labour: ‘North London Intellectuals’ By Michael van der Galien

https://pjmedia.com/trending/nigel-farage-goes-nuclear-on-labour-north-london-intellectuals/

Right after it became clear that British voters would go back to the polls in December, The Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage offered a deal to Tory-leader Boris Johnson. If, he said, the PM would agree to toss out his agreement with the EU and opt for a No-Deal Brexit, TBP would not send any candidates to stand in Conservative strongholds. If, on the other hand, Johnson refused such a deal, it’d be war. Johnson turned down the offer, but — thankfully — Farage seems to take aim mostly at Labour, the socialist party that supposedly supported Brexit, but voted against it every single time it was put up for a vote.

At a campaign rally in Bolsover today, Farage launched into Labour time and again. The party, he said, is dominated by North London “intellectuals” who care little if anything for the common people — let alone for their opinions. Christopher Hope, who works for The Daily Telegraph newspaper, explains:

Farage confirmed Hope’s explanation by adding on Twitter that “the gloves are off in this campaign and we are going after Corbyn’s Labour.”

This is an important development because although Boris Johnson has been let down by his own party several times, it’s clear that he is getting rid of all Remain-stooges. The Conservative Party MPs who will end up in the House of Commons after the elections will be pro-Brexit. All of them. Those who aren’t will be pushed out by Johnson, who knows he’ll have a better shot at getting this thing done with a smaller Tory party that can join forces with The Brexit Party, than with a Tory party that forms a small majority by itself… but with 10 to 20 percent of those Tory MPs being Remainers.

Ruthie Blum Turning Rabbi Firer’s blessings into a feminist curse

https://www.jns.org/opinion/turning-rabbi-firers-blessings-into-a-feminist-curse/

A nationwide argument erupted in Israel over the limits of religious freedom and practice in the public sphere, particularly when involving state-funded or municipal venues.

Leave it to Israelis to create and engage in a heated controversy where it need not exist.

The brouhaha surrounding a benefit concert whose proceeds were earmarked for the health-care NGO, Ezra Lemarpe—founded and directed by genius medical autodidact Rabbi Avraham Elimelech Firer—is a perfect example.

The concert, a tribute to the 50-year career of Israeli singer Shlomo Artzi ahead of his 70th birthday, was supposed to take place on Nov. 20. It was canceled on Monday by Firer, who was fed up and clearly hurt by the commotion that his religious beliefs were causing.

The carry-on began when it emerged that certain female singers would be on the program, along with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and other prominent performers. But the rabbi is a haredi (ultra-Orthodox) Jew who adheres to the modesty directive that men may not hear women singing, as their voices can be seductive.

5G policy ‘biggest strategic disaster in US history’ Trump urged to take radical action to ensure the US doesn’t fall further behind David Goldman

https://www.asiatimes.com/2019/11/article/5g-policy-biggest-strategic-disaster-in-us

A prominent Republican who advises President Donald Trump called America’s 5G strategy “the biggest strategic disaster in US history.” US efforts to impede China’s telecom giant Huawei from dominating the global market in fifth-generation mobile broadband have failed, while incompetent regulation and corporate misbehavior have held back the United States’ 5G effort at home, the politician told a closed-door gathering of Republican donors and activists.

The adviser has urged President Trump to make a radical policy shift to ensure that the United States isn’t late to roll out 5G. The US president hasn’t yet made a decision, the adviser said. The US military controls most of the spectrum that civilian 5G broadband would use, and the major US telecom providers are holding back from a full commitment to 5G, the adviser added.

In a separate development, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross told Bloomberg Television Sunday morning that the US would grant licenses “very shortly” to permit US manufacturers to sell components to Huawei and other Chinese tech firms. President Trump in July said that he “easily” would restore tech exports in the context of a trade deal with China, and told the Commerce Department to begin approving export licenses at a White House meeting in early October, the New York Times reported at the time. Echoing other Trump administration officials, Secretary Ross predicted that the first phase of a trade deal with China might be signed this month.

It appears that the Trump administration may be ready to cut its losses on a losing strategy. Huawei has signed equipment agreements with every telecom provider on the Eurasian continent, despite high-profile American threats to cut off intelligence sharing with allies that include Huawei equipment in their networks.

Hamas Joins Iranian Plan to Foil Arabs’ Anti-Corruption Protests by Khaled Abu Toameh

https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/15137/palestinians-hamas-iran

What Iran evidently wants is to see Arabs protesting against the US and Israel — and against nothing else.

It now remains to be seen whether the Arabs who have finally woken up to realize that Iran — and not Israel — is the real threat to their well-being will be able to keep up the momentum and continue their uprising against corruption and Iranian dominance over their countries.

Instead of firing rockets at Israel and demonstrating at the Gaza-Israel border, Palestinians ought to learn from their brothers in Lebanon and Iraq who their real enemies are: Iranian-backed dictators and fake Palestinian leaders, who only know how to lead their people towards further suffering.

In the context of its effort to thwart the current anti-corruption protests in Lebanon and Iraq, Iran has enlisted Khaled Masha’al, the former head of the “political bureau” of the Palestinian Hamas movement, to warn Arabs about the consequences of their demands for reform and democracy.

Iran considers the anti-corruption protests a major threat to its interests in the region. That is most likely why it has decided to unleash Hamas and its other proxies — Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hashd al-Shaabi in Iraq — against the demonstrators on the streets of Beirut and Baghdad. What Iran evidently wants is to see Arabs protesting against the US and Israel — and against nothing else.

As far as Iran’s leaders are concerned, Arabs demanding reform and democracy are damaging Tehran’s effort to dominate Arab countries and prepare for war against Israel. Iran seems to believe that thanks to Tehran’s technological advances, destroying Israel has become possible. “The sinister regime [Israel] must be wiped off the map, and this is no longer a dream but an achievable goal,” said Major General Hossein Salami, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Speaking at the “Jerusalem Pioneers Conference” in Turkey earlier this week, Masha’al expressed concern that the anti-corruption protests, which are also directed against Iran, could turn out to be harmful for the Palestinians.

His major concern, he said, is that the Arabs’ preoccupation with their domestic problems and conflicts would divert their attention from the Palestinian issue and push it to the bottom of their list of priorities. “We hope that this is a temporary preoccupation,” Masha’al said. “We hope that Palestine will return to the top of the [Arabs’] agenda.”
