GERMAN CHANCELLOR FRIEDRICH MERZ’S EMOTIONAL ADDRESS TO A SYNAGOGUE IN MUNICH
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the Reichenbachstrasse Synagogue in Munich on Monday, September 15, 2025, for its official reopening after years of restoration
. Visibly moved, Merz delivered an emotional speech where he appeared to fight back tears as he recalled the crimes committed against Jews by the Nazis.
During his speech, Merz addressed several key points:
- Condemnation of antisemitism: He declared “war on all forms of old and new antisemitism” in Germany, stating that he was ashamed that Jewish communities still require police protection decades after World War II.
- Acknowledged past failures: He admitted that German society and politics have “turned a blind eye for too long” to antisemitism brought into the country by recent migrants from countries where antisemitism is common.
- Significance of the synagogue’s survival: Merz paid tribute to the restored synagogue, which was the only one in Munich to survive the Nazi regime, though it was damaged during the Kristallnacht pogroms in 1938.
- Hope for the future: He expressed hope that Jewish life in Germany could one day exist without the constant need for police protection.
