NY Sends National Guard into Subways The subways are officially a war zone. by Daniel Greenfield

The official media messaging is that crime is at “record lows”. New York City media types smugly post selfies while denying that there’s any violence in the city.

And then the governor sends the National Guard to the subway. The subways are officially a war zone.

Nearly 1,000 New York National Guardsmen, state police and MTA cops are being deployed to carry out bag checks in the Big Apple’s crime-ridden subway system, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday.

The additional forces — made up of 750 guardsmen and 250 law enforcement officers — will work alongside the NYPD to patrol “the city’s busiest transit stations” amid a recent surge in underground violence, Hochul said.

“These brazen, heinous attacks on our subway system will not be tolerated,” Hochul said as she announced a five-point plan to crack down on the city’s burgeoning underground crime wave.

It’s historic… in the worst possible way.

This is the sort of thing Mexico has been doing.

I can’t even think of a time when the National Guard was deployed in the subways. Even post 9/11 when Guardsmen were everywhere, I don’t specifically recall them being in the subways.

Not all that long ago, before criminal justice reform and Bill de Blasio, subways were safe.

The problem with them now isn’t even a lack of police. The NYPD has one of the nation’s biggest forces, it’s that there is no functioning prison system.

Gov. Hochul is willing to send the National Guard into the subways, but not to bring back bail. And without bail, an end to diversion programs and a refusal to prosecute crimes by pro-crime DAs like Alvin Bragg, none of this matters.

The serial thieves and sexual predators, and the gang members and even the schizophrenic meth random stabbers may give it a break while they’re looking at men (and women) in uniform, and then go back to what they’re doing because they know that there are no real consequences.

This is empty theater that mostly inconveniences commuters. It may keep a few thugs from carrying a gun or knife on the subway, but the system is big enough that there are always workarounds and you can’t keep the Guard indefinitely deployed in the subway system anyway.

The solution is to bring back bail, rebuild and reopen the prison system and lock up repeat offenders.

That’s what brought down crime in the 90s. Undoing that destroyed public safety now. The only way to bring down crime is to lock up the criminals.
