Israel’s 9/11 One side is civilization – the other is barbarism. by Bruce Bawer

In Norway, where I live, there is a very useful word: ukultur.

Kultur, of course, means culture. Ukultur is the word for a culture that lacks, well, culture.

Which is to say, a culture that preaches, and practices, barbarism.

There is no greater ukultur on Earth than Islam.

And in the entire Islamic world, there is no denser concentration of ukultur than in the Gaza Strip.

For decades, America and other Western nations have poured extraordinary sums of cash into that tiny area in the utterly misbegotten expectation that the savages who live there, if handed enough money, will choose to civilize themselves.

This notion has never been anything less than insanity.

Why? Here’s why.

Islam, even at its best, is nothing to write home about. It’s a violence-obsessed ideology, masquerading as a peaceful religion, that preaches the conquest and murder of infidels.

In some parts of the Muslim world, Islam is less violent than in others.

But in the Gaza Strip, under Hamas, the terrorist organization that has governed it since 2007, Islam dials up to eleven.

Being that close to the Jewish enemy – even though the Jewish enemy supplies everything from water to emergency health care to Gazans – must make the Jew-hatred just too much to contain.

Hence the walls and fences. Hence the Iron Dome, which apparently failed this time around.

And yet the dollars and euros and pounds and kroner have kept on flowing to these monsters with nothing but Jew-hatred on their minds.

And not just to Hamas, but also to Iran, which helps fund Hamas.

In 2016, the Obama Administration transferred $1.7 billion to Iran. In September, the Biden Administration sent $6 billion.

Biden’s people got Iran to promise that those funds would only be used for “humanitarian purposes” – as if anyone could trust the promises of the Iranian regime.

What proportion of those American funds, sent to Gaza and to Iran, paid for the weapons that murdered innocent Israelis yesterday?

Yesterday, photographs that were censored by the mainstream media could be viewed, if only briefly, on social media. They showed Israeli women and children being cruelly brutalized.

Israel does not treat Palestinians that way.

Not to descend into cliché, but since its founding in 1948, Israel has turned a desert into an oasis – a civilized hub of freedom, prosperity, and technological innovation.

In short, productiveness.

Meanwhile the people of Gaza, despite receiving perhaps the highest level of international humanitarian aid per capita on the entire planet, seem never to have been particularly motivated to be productive.

On the contrary, few places on the planet – certainly few places so small – have been so devoted to destruction.

In short, ukultur.

And the more money they get from the people they hate, the more determined they seem to be to use it to destroy those very people.

I’ve mentioned that I live in Norway. Yesterday the Norwegian state TV channel, NRK, began its evening news by citing the number of Palestinians killed up to that point. It proceeded to give time to an apologist for Hamas, after which NRK’s correspondent in Jerusalem said that young Palestinians are massacring Israelis because they see “no future” for themselves and NRK’s man in Beirut stated that Israel is getting “a taste of its own medicine.”

No surprise there. Many Norwegians, like many other Europeans, have been fed Palestinian propaganda since infancy.

The hell with them. The present conflict is as close as any human circumstance comes to being a black-and-white question.

Israel is civilization. Gaza is barbarism.

Not to bring out the heavy artillery here – or to cite statistical embarrassments that many, many others have pointed out before – but we’ve just been through Nobel Prize season. Jews make up 0.2% of the world population, but have won 22% of Nobel Prizes (even though Scandinavians can be notoriously anti-Semitic).

Meanwhile, Muslims make up 24% of the world population, but have won 1.4% of Nobel Prizes – and half of those were Peace prizes, including the one to Yasir Arafat.

I think I once joked in an article that, just as the SATs are purportedly unfair to certain ethnic groups because they expect you to know words like regatta, the Nobel Prizes are unfair to Muslims because there’s no award for, say, bombing children’s hospitals.

But I don’t feel like joking now.

This attack on Israel happened on the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War. I’m old enough to remember that war. At the time, I never imagined that a half century later Muslims in Gaza would still have failed to get their act together, and would still center their lives on trying to murder Jews.

Can anything positive come of this evil attack? Yes, if people pay attention and learn the truth.

It’s been said that yesterday’s attacks were Israel’s 9/11. Ever since America’s 9/11, apologists for Islam have done a terrific job of painting Muslims as victims, not terrorists.

If this atrocity can lead Americans, and others, to realize just how grotesque a lie that is – well, good.

As for Israel’s retaliation, yesterday an old friend of mine noted online that “[w]hen Dresden commemorated the fortieth anniversary of the city’s destruction by British bombers, the German leadership did not blame the Allies.” Quite rightly, they blamed Hitler.

So, my friend added, whatever Israel does in response to yesterday’s attack, “[t]he blood is on Hamas’s hands. Every drop of it.”

Yes, indeed. Every drop.
