Governor Ron DeSantis is gaining on former president Trump in Iowa since he launched his 2024 campaign, new polls indicate.

Despite Trump’s Super PAC shelling out $18 million in ads targeting DeSantis, the former president’s lead in Iowa has shrunk significantly, Axios reported, based on two internal polls provided by Never Back Down, the governor’s Super PAC.

One poll taken in mid May showed DeSantis polling at 24 percent compared to Trump’s 48 percent — a 24-point deficit for the governor. However, a subsequent poll of 655 respondents taken from May 30 to June 1, right after DeSantis’s swing through the state, showed that margin has narrowed to ten points, with Trump garnering 39 percent to DeSantis’ 29 percent.

Nationally, DeSantis is still coming up short by 27 points, with Trump generating 53 percent support to his rival’s 26 percent, according to a CNN survey conducted on May 24.

In a poll taken in late May, Trump pollster McLaughlin and Associates also found that support for the former president has been slipping in Iowa. Between April 27-30 and May 23-25, Trump lost 4.5 points and DeSantis gained 4.5 points, resulting a 9-point swing in the governor’s favor, though he still trailed Trump by 25 points.

Never Back Down has knocked on 65,963 doors in Iowa, the PAC told Axios. Their plan is to interact with each of the probable caucus attendees five times before election day. DeSantis gave his campaign kickoff speech in Iowa, after a warm introduction from Republican Governor Kim Reynolds.

In mid May ahead of a trip to Iowa, DeSantis received endorsements from 37 state legislators who represent over a third of the total number of GOP lawmakers in the state’s house and senate.
