Daniel Greenfield-Russia: “With Biden in Office, Positive Shifts Took Place in the U.S. Position”, Treaty “On Our Terms”

Awkward.

The Democrats and their media spent four years falsely accusing President Trump of being a Russian agent even while he was running against Reset Button Hillary. Biden ran on a promise to crawl back into Russia’s scam arms control treaty for five years with no preconditions.

The Russians had been begging President Trump to at least extend it for one year. The Trump admin was offering it with a lot of conditions.

In his first phone call with Putin, President Trump blasted the START treaty as a bad deal that gave Moscow a free ride.

The Trump administration was skeptical of New START, arguing that it had allowed Russia to build up advanced nuclear systems that aren’t constrained by the treaty. Trump’s arms control envoy, Marshall Billingslea, had also insisted that China be brought into the arms control process. Billingslea attempted to negotiate a shorter-term extension of New START, paired with a freeze on all nuclear warheads and a commitment to broaden future talks to include other nuclear powers.

What was Biden’s position?

Former Vice President Joe Biden has said he would be willing to extend New START the full five years permitted under the treaty, without preconditions

No preconditions. That’s how the new cold warriors roll.

So the Russians are taking a deserved victory lap. They’ve got another weak lefty in the White House they can slap around for four years.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov declared on Wednesday morning that the U.S. had agreed to extend the treaty “on our terms” for another five years, without any preconditions or changes to the existing terms of the pact.

The Trump administration had stalled on renewing the accord and demanded what Ryabkov called on Wednesday “unacceptable conditions.” He told Russian lawmakers in televised remarks that: “With Biden in office, positive shifts took place in the U.S. position, which we can only welcome.”

And the media is trying to awkwardly spin the situation.

Russia’s parliament ploughed ahead on Wednesday to ratify a bill extending the New START nuclear arms control treaty with the United States after the first phone call between President Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin announced on Tuesday that Russia and the U.S. had struck a deal to extend the treaty — the last arms control pact between the world’s two biggest nuclear powers — which is set to expire on February 5.

But Russia’s eager declaration that an agreement had been reached “on our terms” appeared to get slightly out ahead of the Biden administration’s assessment of circumstances.

Assessment. Spin.

The Russians are desperate to cash in their winnings and extend the treaty before Biden passes out in the bath. Meanwhile, the Democrats and their media keep emphasizing all of Biden’s hot air from the Putin call about human rights and hacks. None of which amounted to any actual actions.

Moscow is stating very clearly that the Trump administration was too hard on them and that Biden’s position is more favorable to Russia.

There was nothing after that statement from the White House to confirm that any agreement had been reached, suggesting the Biden administration could have at least been expecting a few more days of negotiation with Moscow before a formal announcement.

Negotiations over what? Biden already agreed to a 5-year renewal with no preconditions. It’s over. There’s nothing to negotiate. Biden sold out America. Again.
