Those who fail to learn from the past, are condemned to repeat it as grim farce.,

Three men who placed a wreath at a Holocaust monument in Belgium were charged with violating the country’s emergency measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

The men, including a City Council member from the town of Boortmeerbeek, were notified of a police investigation against them last week after laying a wreath on April 19 at a local monument commemorating the 1943 hijacking by resistance fighters of a train transporting Jews from Belgium to be murdered at Auschwitz.

On Friday, Belgium lifted some restrictions on movement, ending its lockdown. But gatherings and celebrations are still prohibited, leading to the police action against the three men, who are all members of the National Combatants Organization of Belgium, the Belga news agency reported.

The councilman, Michel Baert, protested the police action against him and his fellow activists.

“This was not, and should not be treated as, an illegal party,” he told Belga. “This was an essential action out of respect for the resistance fighters, Holocaust victims and family members.”

More than 100 Jews were saved in the Boortmeerbeek train hijacking, known also as the German 20th Transport action.

The JTA is a bunch of left-wing hacks and manage to botch the simplest stories. The NSB is the Nationale Strijdersbond or the National Fighters Association. It’s a patriotic group of veterans. But, unlike say the VFW, it includes resistance members.

There’s also added important information.

President Baert was inspired for the action by Prime Minister Wilmès, who deposited flowers – in full corona lockdown – at the monument to the victims of the attacks in Brussels and at Zaventem airport on 22 March. “I saw her on television and decided to also organize a small ceremony in memory of the heroes of Transport XX. In Brussels there were even more people than ours. What is the difference? I think this is an essential displacement. It is a crucial message to society and important for posterity, “says Baert.

Is one lost any sense of humanity? We must continue to commemorate the heroes who gave their lives for sabotaging a Nazi transport, ”says N-VA MP Freilich. “Obviously everyone has to respect the rules, that is to say keep a meter and a half away, respect social distancing, etc. The Prime Minister also did this when commemorating the attacks in Zaventem and Maalbeek where she laid a wreath, “says Freilich.

If the court does not dismiss the fines, Freilich wants to pay them himself. “What I find particularly offensive is that there was no police on the spot, so these people were ‘clicked’ on their Facebook post. Can it be even more cynical? ”

In other words, Freilich posted the photo on Facebook and people reported it, resulting in police action. Clearly people are doing a fantastic job of learning the lessons of history.
