Reading like the greatest spy novel ever written, leaving followers salivating over the next chapter, regardless of allegiance to the players involved, the targeting of then-candidate Donald Trump by the U.S. intelligence apparatus under former President Barack Obama just keeps getting better.

Following special counsel Robert Mueller’s findings that allegations of collusion between the president’s campaign and Russia were little more than a hoax, Attorney General William Barr tasked John Durham, the U.S. Attorney in Connecticut, with investigating the investigators — in effect, to determine how Trump had become a target.

On Thursday, the Washington Times reported Durham has acquired two BlackBerrys used by Maltese professor Joseph Mifsud, who’s intricately linked to the whole story.

More from The Times:

Sidney Powell, attorney for retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, filed a court motion on Monday disclosing the phones’ existence while tying them to Western intelligence.

She told The Washington Times on Thursday that she has confirmed that it was Mr. Durham’s office who obtained them.

Powell filed a motion in district court to have the government turn over the data on the BlackBerrys. Flynn is facing a tentative sentencing hearing on Dec. 18.

“This information is material, exculpatory, and relevant to the defense of Mr. Flynn, and specifically to the “OCONUS LURES” and agents that western intelligence tasked against him likely as early as 2014 to arrange—unbeknownst to him—‘connections’ with certain Russians that they would then use against him in their false claims. The phones were used by Mr. Joseph Mifsud,” the motion reads, according to The Times.

(“OCONUS LURES” being a phrase the FBI uses to refer to spies outside the continental United States)

Former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos said Mifsud told him in 2016 Russia had “dirt” on Hillary Clinton, which would set into motion a probe by the FBI that would lead to Mueller’s two-year investigation — the dirt being thousands of Clinton emails.

This would result in the FBI launching an investigation, initiated by the Trump-hating former FBI agent Peter Strzok, who was later fired in disgrace.

The paper noted that the FBI and Mueller contended that Mifsud was a Russian asset, while Papadopoulos contends he was a Western agent sent to entrap him.

The Blackberrys could settle that dispute.

And while it remains to be seen what’s on the devices, the notion that the entire house of cards could collapse at any given moment is certainly enough to make a few people very nervous — particularly so should it put more emphasis on what role, if any, Obama may have played.

Papadopoulos responded to the latest development to say he has “lived this spy story,” which he went on to call the “greatest spying scandal in history.”

He also warned that Alexander Downer was next to be exposed — the top Australian diplomat told US officials that after a night of heavy drinking, Papadopoulos boasted about Russia having dirt on Clinton’s campaign — this prompting the Trump probe.

“I lived this spy story. The government’s of the UK, Australia, Italy sent their agents: Mifsud, Downer, Halper, Azra Turk and many more,” Papadopoulos tweeted. “With the new info on Mifsud’s phones with the DOJ, my story was the one that exposed the greatest spying scandal in history. Downer is next!”

Conservative commentator and noted social media personality J. Bradford Williams tweeted that given this revelation, fired FBI director James Comey, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former CIA director John Brennan “must be having a rough week.”

“They know they’re screwed,” he commented. “The reckoning is coming, folks.”
