Human rights are the most powerful political currency of our time. The United Nations, which rose from the ashes of World War II and the Holocaust, was intended to serve as a beacon of moral values. But the UN human rights system squandered the commitment and passion of its original benefactors. Today, we have come full circle. The abuse of human rights principles on a global scale is facilitated and encouraged by the human rights mechanisms of the very organization entrusted with their safekeeping: the United Nations.

Human Rights Voices is, therefore, dedicated to:

• drawing attention to real victims of human rights abuse;
• making transparent the UN’s record on its fundamental promise — to identify, condemn, and protect against human rights violations, and to confront and respond to threats to international peace and security; and
• providing an information base that encourages modern-day democratic societies to re-evaluate foreign policy directions for improving human rights conditions.
