ILAN BERMAN: THE KREMILIN’S IRAN PROBLEM

http://www.ilanberman.com/11872/the-kremlin-iran-problem On Monday and Tuesday, all eyes will be on Russia as it hosts the third round in the troubled international negotiations now under way between Iran and the West over the former’s nuclear program. The stakes in the parlay are exceedingly high. Previous negotiations in Turkey and Baghdad failed to generate any substantive progress […]

JOHN FUND: WILL HOLDER’S POLITICKING FINALLY END?

http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/303069/will-holder-s-politicking-finally-end-john-fund The Washington Post just bestowed its “Worst Week in Washington” award on Attorney General Eric Holder, and it’s not hard to see why. Over the weekend, Senator Joe Lieberman, who caucuses with the Democrats, clearly expressed his lack of confidence in Holder by calling for a special counsel who is independent of the Justice […]

DAVID SINGER: THE WRONGS OF THE RABBIS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

http://daphneanson.blogspot.com/

‘Rabbis for Human Rights (RHR) – a leading non-government human rights organization (NGO) in Israel – has made an unprecedented attack on the integrity of Israel’s High Court, whilst simultaneously attempting to undermine what little is left of the stalled Peace Process between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
The Rabbis have opened themselves up to such criticism as a result of their involvement in a case before Israel’s High Court alleging illegal building activity in Susya – an Arab village located in Area C of the West Bank which is presently under Israel’s total administrative and security control.

RHR’s web site mandates the organization

“advocating for the rights of marginalized members of society, in defending the rights of minorities in Israel and of Palestinians in the Occupied Territories”

RHR has, however, chosen to go beyond this human rights agenda by engaging in partisan political activity on behalf of the Palestinian Authority – using the Susya case as the catalyst and its residents as political footballs in the process.

RHR made this political objective very clear when warning:

‘At first blush, it may seem that this is “only” about the threat to demolish the entire village of Susya, the homes of these simple cave dwellers of the South Hebron Hills. However, the truth is that the results will affect the fate of hundreds of Palestinian homes throughout the Occupied Territories, perhaps thousands. The outcome may well have an effect on our major appeal to return planning authority for Palestinian communities in Area C to Palestinian hands.’

Since more than 95 per cent of the Palestinian Arabs already live in Areas A and B where (under the Oslo Accords) the Palestinian Authority, not Israel, has full administrative control over what is built and not built in those areas, this claim was both alarmist and unsustainable.

DANA VALLEJO: THE LOONY LEFT PALESTINIAN HORROR SHOW READ IT ALL

http://www.thecommentator.com/article/1320/loony_left_palestinian_horror_show

1. CHILDREN OF THE GAZA?

2. HAPPY HOUR OVER AT THE GUARDIAN

3. OBAMA’S SMOOTH GROOVES

4. TOM AND JERRY WOLFOWITZ?

5. GREENPEACE PORKY-PIES (OR GREENCEASE)

Being something of a horror/thriller movie connoisseur (call it a guilty pleasure) I’m well accustomed to the full spread of tried and tested formulae: claustrophobic camera angles that suggest the baddy is creeping right behind the goody; foolhardy leads who are apparently allergic to light switches when searching for axe-wielding psychopaths hiding under their stairs; people who promise to “be right back”, only to meet their doom in a violent flash; little girls with long black hair in white dresses; and generally anything to do with puppets, clowns, and children’s toys.

So what of the latest work from the Palestinian organisation, Burj Luq-Luq Community Center and Society, which features evil puppets that encourage children to kill with machine guns?

They only get 4/10 for concept – as we’ve seen, using puppets and children’s toys in the horror genre is a tired cliché (see Dead Silence, Child’s Play, Puppetmaster etc.)

I’ll raise to 8/10 for potential story development – children waving machine guns around is a terrifying prospect, though, sadly for Burj Luq-Luq, the violent child plot has also been done to death – no pun intended (see We Need to Talk about Kevin, Funny Games, Children of the Corn etc.)

But I’ll have to give them 10/10 for general chill factor. Why? Because it’s real. Not “real” in the marketing sense of, say, the Blair Witch Project or Cannibal Holocaust. No, real, real. As in, you know, real.

Because the following isn’t a trailer for Burj Luq-Luq’s newest movie (you’ve probably figured out by now that they don’t make movies…) – it’s footage from an “educational” puppet show held for Palestinian children in East Jerusalem.

Repugnant? Yes, of course. But the most frightening aspect of this psychotic, brain-washing horror story is the fact that Burj Luq-Luq has “strategic ties” with UNICEF and UNESCO amongst others.

DANIEL GREENFIELD: KING CON

http://sultanknish.blogspot.com/

Let us suppose for a moment that Obama’s endorsement of gay marriage was a courageous step, rather than an admission of an opinion that everyone but a few dupes knew he already held. Now let’s allow that moment to pass, because if, as liberals say, it was the right thing to do, then why did he wait so long to do it?

No matter how many rainbow halos Newsweek sticks around his photoshopped head, there is no escaping the inescapable conclusion that Obama’s alternating opposition and support for two men holding hands in a Las Vegas chapel while an Elvis impersonator pronounces them man and man, has nothing to do with his ideals and everything to do with precise political calculations.

Liberal apologetics explain Obama’s decline as the woes of a naive idealistic lad, another Mr. Smith who spends too much stuttering and playing golf, to be able to properly explain to America why it needs to get in touch with its inner liberal child. But if Obama had been that fellow, he would have given his Adam and Steve speech a few days into his administration, not after a few years and some heckling from gay rights advocates.

Obama’s Dream Act is a creature from the same closet. Trade in the rainbow halo for a tricolor sombrero and give Latino voters something to chew on going into the election. There’s nothing idealistic about the maneuver. Much as liberals want their Josiah Bartlet, instead they’ve got David Hampton, who’s slick, smooth and completely unprincipled.

If legalizing illegals is the right thing to do, then like gay marriage, it was the right thing to have done years ago. Instead the timing testifies that it wasn’t the right to do for America. It was the right thing to do for Obama.

Obama deciding to carpet bomb American jobs would be bad enough, but what’s worse is that he did it in the service of his own needs. It’s grand scale policymaking whose only purpose is to get one man another four years doing a job that he isn’t very good at. And if a few hundred thousand Americans have to lose their jobs for him to get his back, that doesn’t bother him.

MARK STEYN: EARTHLY WOES MOUNT AS HIS RHETORIC SOARS….

http://www.steynonline.com/

Round about this time in the election cycle, a presidential challenger finds himself on the stump and posing a simple test to voters: “Ask yourself – are you better off now than you were four years ago?”

But, in fact, you don’t need to ask yourself, because the Federal Reserve Board’s Survey of Consumer Finances has done it for you. Between 2007 and 2010, Americans’ median net worth fell 38.8 percent – or from $126,400 per family to $77,300 per family. Oh, dear. As I mentioned a few months ago, when readers asked me to recommend countries they could flee to, most of the countries worth fleeing to Americans can no longer afford to live in.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – JUNE 15: U.S. President Barack Obama responds to a question from Neil Munro of the Daily Caller after he interrupted the president during his remarks about the Department of Homeland Security’s recent announcement about deportation of illegal immigrants in the Rose Garden at the White House June 15, 2012 in Washington, DC. With the DREAM Act unable to gain traction in Congress, Obama announced that his administration would stop deporting some young people who came to U.S. as children of illegal immigrants.

Which means we’ll just have to fix things here. How likely is Barack Obama to do this? A few days ago he came to Cleveland, a city that is a byword for economic dynamism, fiscal prudence, and sound government. He gave a 54-minute address that tried the patience even of the most doting court eunuchs. “One of the worst speeches I’ve ever heard Barack Obama make,” pronounced MSNBC’s Jonathan Alter, as loyal Democrat attendees fled the arena to volunteer for the Obamacare death-panel pilot program. In fairness to the president, I wouldn’t say it was that much worse, or duller, or more listless and inert than previous Obama speeches. In fact, much of it was exactly the same guff he was peddling when Jonathan Alter’s pals were still hailing him as the world’s greatest orator. The problem is the ever-widening gulf between the speech and the slough of despond all about.

DANIEL JOHNSON: ON JEWS AND CATHOLICS

http://www.jewishideasdaily.com/content/module/2012/6/18/main-feature/1/catholics-jews-and-jewish-catholics/e

Jews and Catholics in the English-speaking world have so much in common that they ought to make common cause more often than they actually do. The friction between them that sometimes catches fire is, as often as not, based on mutual ignorance and mistrust. On the Jewish side, the mistrust is hardly surprising. For nearly two thousand years, the Church preached anti-Judaism in theory and practice. Only after the Holocaust did a small group of Catholic thinkers—most of them converts from Judaism—have any success in persuading the Church to rethink its anti-Jewish doctrine.
The State of Christianity Elliot Jager, Jewish Ideas Daily. Strangely enough, what’s “good for the Jews”—and the Jewish state—is to see Christianity thriving. SAVE

It was a process that culminated in 1965’s Nostra Aetate (“In Our Age”), the declaration of the Second Vatican Council that definitively repudiated the ancient accusation against the Jews of deicide. Further, the Council stated that God’s covenant with the Jews remained valid, that they should not be presented as “rejected or accursed by God,” and that the Church “decries hatred, persecutions, displays of anti-Semitism, directed at the Jews at any time and by anyone.” Breaking with the theology of supersession, Nostra Aetatereminded Catholics of their debt to the Jews, summed up in “the words of the Apostle [Paul] about his [Jewish] kinsmen: ‘theirs is the sonship and the glory and the covenants and the law and the worship and the promises; theirs are the fathers and from them is the Christ according to the flesh.'” Thus the Church, which had always seen itself as the new Israel, at last gave the people of Israel its due place in the history of salvation: the duty of Catholics to “Abraham’s sons” was not conversion but reconciliation.

This dramatic and disturbing story forms the subject of John Connelly’s remarkable new book, From Enemy to Brother: The Revolution in Catholic Teaching on the Jews, 1933-1965. Connelly, who teaches history at Berkeley, has mastered a vast and obscure literature, much of it hitherto unpublished and most of it in German, in order to establish the contours of what he aptly characterizes as a “revolution” in mid-20th-century Catholic thought.
