Farewell, Gen Shimon Erem – 1922 – 2012

The pro-Israel community has lost a giant supporter of Israel and a cherished symbol of Israel’s modern history.General Shimon Erem died on Sunday, May 27, 2012.
When he was just 15 years old, Shimon Erem joined the Jewish underground. For the past 75 years since that time, he has devoted every day of his life fighting for Jewish survival and the state of Israel.
At the age of 20, Shimon joined the Jewish Brigade of the British Army to fight against the Nazis in World War II. He received four awards in the course of his service: two Military Crosses and two Citations.

After the war, he was appointed by David Ben-Gurion to be a Commander of Underground Operations in Europe. He also led a group of Jewish veterans involved in Nazi hunting and he helped Holocaust survivors make their way from Europe to Israel. He was selected to be an instructor in the first officers school of the soon to be declared State of Israel.

Shimon fought for Israel in its War of Independence–where he served at the Latrun (the Road to Jerusalem) and the southern front against the Egyptian army, receiving citations from the commanders and suffering wounds at both fronts. He also participated in the Sinai Campaign, the 1967 Six Day War and the Yom Kippur War in 1973. He received an award from the President of Israel for distinguished service.

Shimon spent the past three decades working tirelessly to build Christian support for Israel and the Jewish community throughout the US and in Europe. In 2002, he founded the Israel Christian Nexus to unite and mobilize the two communities in support of the people and State of Israel. The work of the Nexus is Shimon’s legacy to all people who love Israel. It was his hope that the Nexus will continue on after his passing, expanding on his vision for safeguarding those shared values in Israel and in the west.

No one was more admired and treasured by Shimon than his wife and partner for the past 42 years, Danielle. She was his hero. He said she was his “Angel sent to him by G-d,” and that he could “not have accomplished all that he has without her at his side.” Together, Shimon and Danielle are the parents of five children, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. We wish the family strength and comfort among the mourners of Jerusalem.
