JERRY GORDON: ANOTHER “HONOR” INCIDENT IN ARIZONA

Yusra Farhan, an Iraqi Muslim immigrant mother, was arrested in Phoenix for the beating of her 19 year old daughter, whom she had padlocked to the young woman’s bed.  Her daughter’s offense?  She was glimpsed by her father speaking to a young male in a high school parking lot.  This incident may well have ended tragically in death as another honor shame  incident did in Arizona last year.  In that case  an Iraqi immigrant father Faleh al-Maleki was convicted for running down and killing his daughter, Noor,  for similar reasons. See our post on that prior incident, here.

This Reuters report, “Phoenix Police Say Iraqi Mom beat her daughter and padlocked her to bed,” provides details of the incident:
An Iraqi woman has been arrested in Arizona accused of beating her daughter and padlocking her to a bed in outrage after she spoke to a male student at school in violation of the family’s traditional values, police said on Friday.
Yusra Farhan was taken into custody after a struggle with officers on Wednesday at a Phoenix hospital where her 19-year-old daughter was being treated for minor injuries, Phoenix police spokesman James Holmes said.
Farhan, 50, faces charges of aggravated assault, unlawful imprisonment and resisting arrest. She was being held in a Maricopa County jail. Police did not identify her daughter by name.
The incident started on Tuesday, when the daughter was spotted by her father talking to a 19-year-old man at a high school parking lot in Phoenix. Police said her father became angry and took her home, striking her several times.
The mother arrived home later and admitted to hitting her daughter with her hands and a shoe, and tying her to the bed with a rope around her waist that was secured with a padlock, court records showed.
Farhan told police she hit her daughter because she “was speaking to a male subject and her Iraq culture states a female is not allowed to be having contact with males because females are not allowed to have boyfriends,” court records said.
The daughter was allowed to leave for school the next morning and was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix after telling school officials about the incident.
Police arrived at the hospital and attempted to arrest Farhan, but she and other family members struggled with officers, Holmes said. She was ultimately arrested with the help of additional officers and hospital security. No other arrests were made.
“In an attempt to diffuse the situation in the hospital, officers determined that it would be better to just remove the mother from the scene,” Holmes said, adding that additional charges were expected to be filed in the case.
This latest incident comes on the heels of the horrific Shafia  case in Canada involving an Afghan immigrant family that witnessed the  quadruple murder of a first wife in a polygamous marriage and three daughters and resulted in the conviction of  the father,  son and  second wife.  Whether Canada or the US, this plague of honor shame incidents can be traced to the tribal culture condoned by Islam.  An Islam that believes women inherently evil and placing them under the control of dominant males in their families subject to beatings and worse,  death.  All allegedly done  to restore the family’s honor.  This is the alien culture that Yusra Farhan held more important than her daughter’s life.  Her act now places her in criminal proceedings under the laws of the State of Arizona, that could see her conviction.  Nothwithstanding ,  the mother’s conviction might  still leave her daughter at risk of death at the hands of her father and other relatives.
We have to ask ourselves why officials  who administer our refugee immigration laws facilitate the influx of those who neither value a women’s life nor respect our laws and common decency under our our Constitution and Judeo-Christian values.  Such persons should be screened prior to admittance under our generous humanitarian refugee system.  A system badly in need of overhaul.
Perhaps Arizona  might take up the refugee absorptive capacity statute enacted in 2011 in Tennessee as a preventive measure to  deter future honor shame incidents. Incidents that all too frequently in Muslim immigrant communities result in the beatings and all deaths of women, daughters and wives.
