GAZA CITY — The Iranian-sponsored Islamic Jihad has suffered a major setback by the Israeli assassination of five senior operatives.

Palestinian sources said Israeli air strikes killed at least five senior
Jihad operatives on Oct. 29. They said the most prominent of the casualties
was identified as Ahmed Khalil, commander of Jihad’s unit that designs and
enhances rockets.

“Khalil was the chief producer of rockets made from Iranian design,” a
Palestinian source said. “He was highly efficient.”

Khalil and four of his deputies were killed in an attack by an Israel
Air Force unmanned aerial vehicle in a Jihad base outside the southern city
of Rafah. The base was located on the former Jewish community of Atzmona,
evacuated by Israel in 2005.

The four deputies of Khalil were also said to have been specialists in
the development and manufacture of munitions and rockets. The sources said
Khalil was responsible for the introduction of extended-range BM-21 Grad
rockets, capable of striking up to 40 kilometers into Israel.

“There is no chance of speaking about a truce now, following such a big
crime against leaders of the group,” Jihad spokesman Abu Ahmed said.
