A STITCH IN JEWISH TIME: FABULOUS EXHIBIT AT VERED GALLERY IN EAST HAMPTON NEW YORK

A STITCH IN JEWISH TIME

EXHIBITION DATES: Sept 3 – 30, 2011

PLACE: Vered Gallery 68 Park Place, East Hampton NY 11937

The many artists in A Stitch in Jewish Time change our conception of materials, form, construction and creative reach.  In the realm of conceptual fine art, each is outstanding and leaves an indelible impression that expands our perception of contemporary art and enhances our understanding of Jewish history, experience, and values.  Individually, the artists address issues of memory and reflection, interpretations of history and ritual, and links between the past and present.  They delve into aspects of the Holocaust, war, patriotism, celebration, prayer, feminism and sexuality, frequently through the inclusion of Biblical texts and sometimes challenging traditional forms.  Although the exquisite tapestries of Renaissance and Baroque Europe are treated as an art, fabrication of textiles was, for centuries, considered a domestic craft—“women’s work”.  This restrictive positioning changed radically in the 1960’s when the first feminist art program, Womanhouse,  was founded at the California Institute of the Arts.  Artists in A Stitch in Jewish Time are both male and female, Jewish and non-Jewish.  The concept for the exhibition, curated by their director, Laura Kruger, and some of the works, are from an exhibition at HUC-Hebrew Union College.

Following is an overview, there are more wonderful works in the exhibition.
