SAUDI ARABIA’S BARBARIC TREATMENT OF FOREIGN DOMESTICS
Saudi Arabia is a dangerous place for many foreign domestic workers
There are an estimated 1.5million foreign servants working in households in the oil-rich kingdom.
In 2008, Human Rights Watch documented widespread abuse of Asian maids.
As well as frequently suffering wretched working conditions, many women were routinely subjected to emotional, sexual and physical abuse, campaigners reported.
But since maids are usually housebound and far from home, it can be difficult to get help.
One Indonesian woman told the group she regularly suffered attacks at the hands of her employer.
‘She beat me until my whole body burned. She beat me almost every day,’ she said.
‘She would beat my head against my head against the stove until it was swollen.’
Outrage: Ruyati binti Sapub, an Indonesian, was killed for murdering her employer after she claims she was repeatedly abused
