The U.S. and Syria: Another bow

By Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
It’s one thing — reckless — to be deferential in your foreign policy. But it’s another thing entirely — a dereliction of duty — to be dishonest. Welcome to the Obama administration.

This president already has shown, and quite consistently, how seriously out of his element he is in matters foreign. Think of his literal bows before foreign potentates. Think of his materiel bows in New START. Think now of his wretched bow to Syria.

Last week, as unrest continued to roil the Middle East and escalated in Syria, the Obama administration became the official mouthpiece for President Bashar Assad, a common dictator whose only mission is to continue the thuggery of the previous dictator, his father.

How did Secretary of State Hillary Clinton characterize this rank piece of garbage who oversees a vast network of state-sponsored terrorism, a killer of a prime minister and U.S. soldiers alike and, just for good measure, journalists who might report on his atrocities?

As a “reformer.”

How embarrassing. But, worse, how dangerous.

Just as Mr. Obama’s wishy-washy speech about Libya only served to embolden Moammar Gadhafi to step up his butchering campaign, the administration’s incomprehensible “reformer” tag has only given Mr. Assad cover to continue plying his ugly trade of repressing, torturing and killing his own people and helping others do the same elsewhere.

And that’s simply despicable.
