American Servicemen Shot Dead in Germany by Muslim Fanatic

News from Der Spiegel, Daily Mail, the UK Guardian, MSNBC, Deutsche Presse-Agentur, The Journal,  Expatica, and AFP via Expatica and AFP again.

Earlier today, at around 3.20 pm local time, a bus carrying U.S. military personnel was attacked by a gunman at Terminal 2 at Frankfurt airport, Germany. Two people were killed and two were injured.  Those who died were the bus driver and one of the U.S. military personnel who was in front of the wheel at the time of the attack. One of the two wounded individuals is said to have serious injuries, while the other is said to have light wounds.

The attacker shouted “Islamic slogans” before opening fire. He has been apprehended. He has been identified as a 21-year old man called Arik Uka. He came from the small town of Mitrovica  in the north of Kosovo. Uka worked at the airport terminal. I find no satisfaction in knowing that we warned here yesterday that:

The case of Russell Defreitas and his associates, and also this latest incident in Britain, should remind people that some of the people who work for airlines and airports could also be planning for jihad…

The identities of the two people who died are being withheld for 24 hours, to allow their relatives to be informed. The Kosovan interior minister, Bajram Rexhepi, said:

“This is a devastating and a tragic event. We are trying to find out was this something that was organized or what was the nature of the attack.”

The bus that was attacked, shielded from public view and being subjected to forensic scrutiny.

The military personnel were airmen attached to the large airbase in southeastern England called RAF Lakenheath which is primarily an American airbase (despite the title “RAF” or “Royal Air Force”). The 48th Fighter Wing is based at Lakenheath. According to MSNBC, the military personnel were a Security Forces team who were being transported from Frankfurt airport to Ramstein “to support overseas contingency operations.”

The website of RAF Lakenheath states of the shooting that the two who died (apparently including the driver) and the two injured personnel were all airmen. 4,500 military personnel are based at Lakenheath.

President Obama said he was “saddened and outraged” by the shooting and said he would “spare no effort” to find out how the incident happened. Angela Merkel, Germany’s Chancellor, promised that her country would do all in its power to investigate the attack.

This post will be updated as more news comes in.
