BLOOMBERG’S RECOVERED MEMORY: MARILYN PENN

For those of us who have struggled to understand our mayor’s passionate defense of the Ground Zero Mosque, we now know the deep-seated psychological scar that undergirds it. (NYTimes 8/13) It seems that his parents shielded their identity as Jews when they bought a house in Medford, Mass in a restricted neighborhood. Oh the horror of it – and how exactly analagous it is to the situation on Park Place – grief counselors may be called to help the mayor deal with this re-opening of an old wound. Hopefully, the mayor won’t proceed from this memory to the reality of how many exclusions and quotas existed for Jews in America at every step of their academic, professional, residential and recreational opportunities. Despite these devastating ordeals, the Jewish people amazingly neither turned to terrorism nor did they call for it from their “religious” pulpits. But back to today’s Times article about the deep roots of the mayor’s defense of the Cordoba mosque.
It seems there is also a long-standing personal association between the mayor and Mr. and Mrs. Rauf – the Imam and his missus. In case you missed this, the Imam led a service at Gracie Mansion last year and actually exchanged some words with Mayor Mike while his wife sat next to the mayor’s girlfriend at the ensuing dinner. Don’t ever accuse Michael Bloomberg of turning on old friends – this is a man who remembers his loyalties just as much as his convictions. Family therapists may be called to help the mayor and his girlfriend deal with the trauma of seeing their valued friendship with the Raufs jeopardized by the current imbroglio.

It strikes me that the Times felt cheated by the fact that Charlie Rangel’s self-serving, irrational harrangue before congress had upstaged everything they had scripted for him during the many, many months of his investigation by the House Ethics Committee. Dejected by this, they turned to our third-term mayor and decided to cloak his irrational behavior in a similar comedy of manners: Michael Bloomberg, himself a victim of prejudice (only one degree of separation), a compassionate and caring friend, a man whose principles were forged by the hardships of bias – had no choice but to valiantly defend the erection of a Muslim mosque at the scene of attack by Muslim terrorists (funded by Muslim states) who discriminately killed 3,000 Americans and forever altered the lives of all of us. Since that fateful day, thousands of other terrorist acts perpetrated in the name of Allah have transpired throughout the world and in our country, yet those who dare to call attention to their roots in Muslim theology are called Islamophobic and accused of betraying nothing less than our constitution.

According to Mayor Mike and the New York Times, if we don’t build the mosque where its developers defiantly chose to put it – the terrorists win! If you’re still scratching your head at this ill-logic, you already understand that one can’t argue with the absurd.
