Lebanon escalate hummus war with Israel
Lebanon has escalated the stakes in a Levantine battle for culinary glory when its chefs concocted a 22,000-lb dish of hummus to snatch back a world record claimed by Israel four months ago.

Reclaiming national pride and seeking to prove that too many cooks do not always spoil the hummus, 300 chefs poured dish after dish of the chickpea-based dip into a giant 10-tonne vat specially created for the purpose.

The result was confirmed by Guinness World Records as the largest hummus dish ever made – double an Israeli effort made in January.

It was also nearly triple the size of Lebanon’s last attempt – which weighed in at 4,500-lb – in October, the last time the country held the record.

The two states have been engaged in a battle of gastronomic one-upmanship ever since Israel was accused on trying to claim the Middle East’s favourite dish as its own last year.

Businessmen in Beirut are planning to take legal action to patent the dish as Lebanese.

The contest is being taken in good humour in both countries, despite a mutual feeling of suspicion built up over decades of Israeli military incursions and cross-border rocket attacks by Hizbollah, which is based in southern Lebanon.
