Yehuda Lev, a journalist and veteran of World War II and Israel’s War of Independence who established a European underground route to smuggle Holocaust survivors to Palestine, has died.Lev died August 3 in Providence, Rhode Island, after a prolonged illness. He was 86.

From the Allied invasion of Europe in June 1944 until the early 1950′s, the surviving remnant of European Jewry received aid from various sources. The American Army, the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA), the International Relief Organization (IRO) and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) provided the majority of the assistance to these Displaced Persons (DPs) during this period. The Vaad Hatzala, representing most American Orthodox Jews, helped in establishing yeshivas and kosher kitchens and providing religious texts and ritual items. The Vaad, the JDC, HIAS (the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society), aided Jews in emigrating to Palestine and the United States. Since there was an ongoing need for additional supplies, many American Jewish chaplains and American Jewish soldiers stationed in the American zones of occupation in Germany and Austria offered their assistance. Most of the Jewish GIs who helped the survivors did so as individuals or in small groups. Their activities were rarely publicized. The major exception was the Frankfurt Jewish GI Council that was established in June 1946.

The war with Germany ended on May 8, 1945 but the war in the Pacific raged as the Allies bombed Japan’s cities and demanded a total surrender, threatening Japan”prompt and utter destruction.” The Japanese ignored the warning and threatened death to the allies using every means in their disposal. American airmen dropped “Little Boy” on Hiroshima on august 6th and “Fat Boy” on Nagazaki pn august 9, 1945.

On 15 August, six days after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan surrendered to the Allies, signing the surrender document on 2 September, officially ending World War II.

It was to be, alas, the last time that America would fight a war determined to win with total surrender. We knew who the enemies were, we knew what their evil ideology was and we destroyed them.

Today Hiroshima is a beautiful and thriving city and Japan is an ally and a democracy.

NEW YORK, August 6, 2013—Frankly my dear, NBC does give a damn, and so does CNN. Both networks, affiliates of the Democrat Party, have films in development about Hillary Rodham Clinton, and they don’t care what anybody says. Already there is noise from the Republican Party, to which the networks say, “There is a Republican Party? Where?”

Which is why (my guess) the reproachful email from the RNC ended up in the spam file until somebody at the networks pointed out that Reince Priebus was for real and so, perhaps, was the Republican National Committee, complaining that the Hillary movies were “a thinly-veiled attempt at putting the thumb on the scales of the 2016 presidential election.”

In other words, NBC’s four-hour miniseries, starring Diane Lane, and CNN’s docudrama, were sure to favor Hillary, if she planned to run.

There are no plans for any Republican to run for president. Ever. It is over and done.

Next came the threat, saying that if NBC and CNN persisted, why in that case, they would lose their chance to host the 2016 GOP Olympics, or debates, which ordinarily attract a national viewership between four and four million Americans. Both NBC and CNN responded by saying, “Oooh. We are so scared.”

This is the second in a series in five parts based on the new book, “American Betrayal: The Secret Assault on Our Nation’s Character” (St. Martin’s Press) by Diana West.

It’s difficult to imagine someone more important in U.S. history than Harry Hopkins, but Americans don’t learn much more than his name, if that, in school.

This means we aren’t taught that Hopkins, FDR’s top wartime advisor, ran what became known as “Roosevelt’s own personal Foreign Office” from the Lincoln Bedroom, where Hopkins lived for three-and-half-years. We aren’t taught that this former social worker in key ways controlled U.S. foreign policy by controlling the distribution of U.S. military materiel to countries at war through his supervision of the massive Lend Lease program. We aren’t taught he attended the famous wartime conferences as de facto “foreign minister.” We certainly aren’t taught that Lend Lease, perhaps even Hopkins himself, pushed uranium and other A-bomb essentials through to Stalin.

These uranium shipments, erased from our historical memory but documented by Congress in 1950, took place at a time when the atomic development program known as the Manhattan Project was, we thought, our most precious secret.

Why would Lend Lease, overseen by Hopkins — who was also, not incidentally, FDR’s liaison to atomic research — do such a thing?

The answer may relate to something else we don’t learn about Harry Hopkins: FDR’s powerful wartime advisor may have been a Soviet agent — and “the most important of all Soviet wartime agents.”
