Lurie Children’s Hospital Leftists Increase Stress for Parents A children’s hospital stay should comfort families—not confront them with activist symbols, controversial ideologies, and moral agendas masked as care. By Laurie Higgins

My young granddaughter was just discharged from Lurie Hospital after a six-day stay preceded by two weeks of headaches and daily vomiting. Her stay included blood draws, an EKG, an MRI, and a lumbar puncture. While the medical care she received was excellent, the visit was egregiously marred by the ignorance and lack of compassion demonstrated by the “LGBTQ+” activism seen everywhere.
Most of the staff who entered her room wore the controversial political “pride” flag pins designed by Daniel Quasar, which incorporate the “trans” “pride” flag designed by Monica Helms.
Quasar is a middle-aged man who identifies as “non-binary” and uses “they/them” pronouns (eyeroll). “Monica” Helms is an elderly cross-dressing man who is faux-married to another elderly cross-dressing man.
During the week at Lurie, it was rare to see a staff member not wearing the controversial pins.
And it was not just pins.
A desk attendant stationed just outside my granddaughter’s room and who entered her room was a young Asian man wearing long ladies’ fake fingernails painted a frosty white. A bald male doctor from Infectious Diseases who visited her room wore long, dangling women’s earrings.
Imagine how theologically orthodox Christian, Muslim, and Orthodox Jewish parents, already under extraordinary stress,s feel about having to explain the pins and peculiar fashion accouterments of adult staff to their young, sick children.
The hospital made available a “pride” craft in the Panda Room that said something like, “We are a family of love.” Apparently, affirming disordered feelings and risky experimental medical “treatments” is akin to love in the moral universe that Lurie has socially constructed.
If parents believe homoerotic acts are not moral acts or if they believe healthy, properly functioning bodies are good and ought not be chemically or surgically manipulated, they are hateful.
And the library section of the Panda Room had displays of picture books intended to normalize homosexuality and cross-sex impersonation. The display included ABC Pride, Kind Like Marsha: Learning from LGBTQ+ Leaders, and perhaps worst of all, Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag.
Lurie Children’s Hospital wants to expose children to and cultivate positive feelings toward homosexual ephebophile Harvey Milk, who, when he was 33 years old, was sexually involved with a sixteen-year-old runaway boy.
Milk, a fan of cult leader Jim Jones, was not murdered because he was homosexual. He was murdered by a former Democrat ally over political ambitions.
Even Democratic former Senator Dianne Feinstein said this about Milk’s murder: “This had nothing to do with anybody’s sexual orientation. … It had to do with getting back his position.”
But if facts get in the way of left-wing activism, activism wins every day.
Maybe before Lurie leftists decide to expose sick children to the sick Harvey Milk, they should read Cult City: Jim Jones, Harvey Milk, and 10 Days That Shook San Francisco by Daniel J. Flynn.
Kind Like Marsha profiles in a sentence or two homosexual and cross-dressing activists like homosexual drag queen “Marsha P. Johnson,” birth name Malcom Michaels Jr., who as a young child was raped by a thirteen-year-old boy. The book doesn’t include that troubling fact.
“Marsha” P. Johnson, “Sylvia” Rivera
Also held out as a role model for children in Kind Like Marsha is “Sylvia Rivera,” a known prevaricator who lied about his involvement in the Civil Rights movement, the anti-Vietnam War movement, second-wave feminism, and the Stonewall Riots.
Rivera was abandoned by his father while young and was orphaned when his mother committed suicide when he was three years old. He was taken in by a grandmother but left her home when he was ten to live on the streets where he became a child prostitute. Those inconvenient facts are omitted. Can’t have kids wondering if childhood trauma may shape disordered adult feelings and behaviors.
Not surprisingly, sodomitic abuser of teens Harvey Milk also appears in Kind Like Marsha. Nothing says “kindness” quite like sexually abusing homeless teens.
In order to expose children to colorful picture books about homosexuals and drag queens, Lurie must have come to the prior conclusion that both homosexuality and cross-sex identification are morally defensible actions. No adults or institutions would expose young children to books that promote sexual behavior those adults or institutions believe are immoral. Is advancing controversial moral assumptions the job of children’s hospitals?
Evidence for the claim that Lurie must have embraced moral assumptions about homosexuality and cross-sex impersonation rests in the absence of colorful picture books that positively portray polyamory, “consanguinamory”—i.e., romantic or sexual relationships between individuals who are related by blood—or zoophilia.
Given their moral assumptions about sex, gender, and autonomously constructed identities, I’m curious why Lurie would object to, for example, picture books about loving relationships between three brothers in a consanguinamorous relationship. Are Lurie leaders hateful, intolerant bigots?
Lurie demonstrates utter disregard for families who may hold different views on sex and gender than the leftists who rule Lurie do. They show no respect for religious diversity. Parents who are taxed physically and emotionally by worry and lack of sleep are burdened unnecessarily by the political machinations of Lurie leftists. These parents must either try to conceal from their children the promotion of immorality as good or explain to their young, sick children ideas to which no young child should be exposed.
There’s an easy, compassionate solution to the problem Lurie leftists created: remove the pride paraphernalia. No young sick child is going to ask, “Why aren’t the nurses and doctors wearing pride pins? Why isn’t that man wearing ladies’ fake nails? Why aren’t there any picture books about homosexuals and cross-dressers?”
But leftist indoctrinators don’t respect diversity. They don’t care if they increase the stress of already burdened families. They demand their propaganda be everywhere, all at once, no matter who is hurt.
I shouldn’t have been surprised. I’ve been writing about Lurie’s impassioned and likely profitable investment in transing kids for a decade.
In 2022, I wrote about Dr. Robert Garofalo, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine’s HIV-positive homosexual professor of pediatrics and division head of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Lurie:
Dr. Robert Garofalo was profiled in a 2015 article titled “The Change Agent” published in Chicago Magazine. The profile reveals that Lurie’s lurid clinic was the brainchild of activist Garofalo:
Garofalo’s clinic, one of only 25 of its kind in the nation and the first to open in the Midwest, is pushing the boundaries of treatments for the growing population of transgender kids. In the past, patients this young were often redirected through “corrective” therapy to more gender-typical behaviors; Garofalo and his 25-person team take a much different approach: They aid these patients in transitioning.
Garofalo believes he’s “helping” confused children, who often suffer from co-morbidities like autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, and depression, “become their authentic selves.” By “authentic selves,” Garofalo is referring to what adolescents’ confused, troubled minds desire years before their brains are fully developed.
Chicago Magazine writes about one patient of Garofalo, a boy (i.e., an actual boy) who was named David at birth, then became “Jae” in 2013, then became “Diana” in 2015 when Garofalo recommended he start doping estrogen:
It wasn’t until she [sic] was 12 and saw an episode of Oprah about transgender women that she [sic] realized her [sic] situation was more complicated. She [sic] asked her [sic] mom to make an appointment with Garofalo. The doctor immediately put her [sic] on Lupron, a treatment for prostate cancer and fibroid tumors that also happens to suppress puberty.
As with so many adolescents today, David diagnosed himself.
Prior to starting David/Jae/Diana on the estrogen-doping regimen, Garofalo gave him and his mother, Lisa Salas, the requisite consent form:
There are a lot of wishy-washy statements here,” Garofalo continues as he hands them the form. “That’s because there haven’t been many studies on the long-term effects of estrogen on young people.” He pauses to look at Diana’s mother. “I wish I could tell you everything that’s going to happen, but I can’t. There’s just so much that we don’t know yet.
And with that, the diabolical Garofalo proceeded.
Hospitals here and abroad are backing away from providing medical “treatments”—for which there is no science proving safety and efficacy—to minors who have no capacity for making medical decisions that have lifelong consequences. Lurie, however, is digging in its kinky boot heels when it comes to hormonal malfeasance and propaganda.
