“Hashomer,” or “The Watchman,” was a group of young men, mainly from Russia, who took upon themselves the defense of the Jewish settlements in Palestine. To its members, self-defense was intimately linked to the idea of Jewish national restoration. In the words of one:
“Hashomer was a political movement. The intention was to create a national army. Socialist. Revolutionary.”
