Information Monopoly: Facebook’s Suckerberg Wants 7 Billion People Online

Information Monopoly: Facebook’s Suckerberg Wants 7 Billion People Online:

Food, water and the Internet?

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants to get all of the world’s 7 billion people online through a partnership with some of the largest mobile technology companies. He says the Web is an essential part of life, and everyone deserves to be connected, whether they live in Norway, Nicaragua or Namibia.

“The Internet not only connects us to our friends, families and communities, but it is also the foundation of the global knowledge economy,” Zuckerberg wrote in a paper posted to his Facebook page this week. The title asks “Is Connectivity A Human Right?”

Of course, connecting more people to the Internet is the kind of philanthropy that would create more potential Facebook users, which would also help boost the company’s bottom line.

“There’s nothing wrong with that,” said Fordham University communications professor Paul Levinson, author of “New New Media.”

Latest Fort Hood: Terrorist Argues Against Lesser Charges

Latest Fort Hood: Terrorist Argues Against Lesser Charges:

An Army psychiatrist defending himself against charges that he targeted soldiers in a massacre at Fort Hood argued against allowing a jury to consider lesser charges, telling the court the attack was not carried out in the heat of sudden passion.

There was “adequate provocation” for the attack because the soldiers were going to participate in “an illegal war” in Afghanistan, Maj. Nidal Hasan told a military judge considering Wednesday whether to include a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter or unpremeditated murder in instructions to be given to the jury.

The instructions are scheduled to …

Confirmed: Mubarak to be Released this Week

Confirmed: Mubarak to be Released this Week:

Egypt’s deposed former Prime Minister Hosni Mubarak is to be freed from prison and placed under house arrest on Thursday after being ordered released the previous day, following more than two years in detention.

The development is a new twist in the saga of the long-time president, toppled in Egypt’s popular uprising in 2011, and could potentially stoke tensions in the deeply divided nation. It could also amplify the anger against the military-backed government and Islamist allegations that last month’s military coup against Mubarak’s successor, Mohammed Morsi, was a step toward restoring the old regime.

On Wednesday, …

Noor TV, an Islamic television station which broadcasts from the UK, has been fined £85,000 (more than $130,000) for comments inciting murder made by one of its presenters during a call-in show.

In December, Ofcom – Britain’s media regulating body – ruled that the station had breached broadcasting codes after Presenter Allama Muhammad Farooq Nizami  (pictured) urged Muslims to murder anyone who disrespects the Islamic prophet Mohammed.

“There is no disagreement about this,” he said at the time. “There is absolutely no doubt about it that the punishment for the person who shows disrespect for the …

Prosecution Seeks 15 Years for Florida Imam Guilty of Supporting the Taliban

Prosecution Seeks 15 Years for Florida Imam Guilty of Supporting the Taliban:

An elderly Muslim cleric convicted of sending tens of thousands of dollars to finance the Pakistani Taliban terror organization should spend at least 15 years in prison, federal prosecutors recommended Wednesday.

Hafiz Khan, 78, could get as much as 60 years behind bars when he is sentenced Friday because each of the four terrorism supported-related convictions carry maximum 15-year sentences. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Shipley said in court papers that combining all four potential sentences into one would be sufficient punishment.

Sentencing is scheduled before U.S. District Judge Robert Scola.
