MY SAY: HOW QUICKLY WE FORGET AUGUST 6 AND AUGUST 9, 1945

The war with Germany ended on May 8, 1945 but the war in the Pacific raged as the Allies bombed Japan’s cities and demanded a total surrender, threatening Japan”prompt and utter destruction.” The Japanese ignored the warning and threatened death to the allies using every means in their disposal. American airmen dropped “Little Boy” on Hiroshima on August 6th and “Fat Boy” on Nagazaki on August 9, 1945.

On 15 August, six days after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan surrendered to the Allies, signing the surrender document on 2 September, officially ending World War II.

It was to be, alas, the last time that America would fight a war determined to win with total surrender. We knew who the enemies were, we knew what their evil ideology was and we destroyed them.

Today Hiroshima is a beautiful and thriving city and Japan is an ally and a democracy.
