MY SAY: HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!!

Today we celebrate 237 years of the founding of this glorious nation on principles that still hold in spite of divisions, civil war, world wars, a counterculture that threatened the fabric of our values and freedoms. We can still right government every four years and we can still say proudly “I am an American”…..whether you hail from the Russian pale, Ghana, China or my own birthplace Bolivia.

It is also inspiring to note that Judaism’s principles, thousands of year old still guide democracy. The struggle of our ancient brethren against evil and wicked rulers inspired America’s founding fathers. In fact, the first design for the official seal of the United States recommended by Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson in 1776 depicted the Jews crossing the Red Sea. The motto around the seal reads: “Resistance to Tyrants is Obedience to God.”

The inscription on the Liberty Bell at Independence Hall in Philadelphia is a quote from Leviticus: “”Proclaim liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.” And as my friend Andy Bostom reminds me this morning, these are the words of Benjamin Rush, a Founding Father of the United States who lived in the state of Pennsylvania and was a physician, writer, educator, humanitarian, as well as the founder of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. In 1797, by appointment of President Adams, Rush was made treasurer of the U.S. Mint, a post he held until his death.
“What did not Moses forsake and suffer for his countrymen! What shining examples of patriotism do we behold in Joshua, Samuel, Maccabees and all the illustrious princes, captains and prophets among the Jews.”

So…on this happy anniversary I can proudly sing the lyrics of George M. Cohan

You’re a grand old flag,
You’re a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.

You’re the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.

Ev’ry heart beats true
‘neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there’s never a boast or brag.

But should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE…THEIRS AND OURS: DAVID GOLDMAN

http://pjmedia.com/spengler/2013/07/03/zombie-apocalypse/?singlepage=true Sometime in 2011 the total number of film plots with the keyword “zombie” passed the number of film plots with the keyword “cowboy,” according to the Internet Movie Database. One might argue that the zombie has become the great American archetype of the postmodern era, as the cowboy was the American archetype a century […]

WILL ALLEN: SELF EVIDENT TRUTHS: A Sample of Patriotic Words from Independence Days Past. ****

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/352724/self-evident-truths-will-allen Thomas Jefferson’s opening lines of the Declaration of Independence are not the only immortal words associated with the Fourth. Today, when you’re not out grilling hot dogs, setting off fireworks, or narrowly avoiding a life-changing injury during “touch” football with younger relations, take some time to stretch out on the picnic blanket with a […]

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: THE PRESS AND DOCTOR FAUSTUS

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/352694/press-and-dr-faustus-victor-davis-hanson MAINSTREAM PRESS TO OBAMA….I’M JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU ANYMORE….TOO LATE….RSK In the old Dr. Faustus story, a young scholar bargains away his soul to the devil for promises of obtaining almost anything he wants. The American media has done much the same thing with the Obama administration. In return for empowering a fellow […]

DEROY MURDOCK: A DECLARATION OF INCOMPETENCE

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/352728/washington-deserves-declaration-incompetence-deroy-murdock As America celebrates this week’s 237th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the federal government deserves a Declaration of Incompetence. Agree or disagree with Washington’s policies, it seems to get almost nothing right. Money flies in every direction as programs flop daily. Subjected by monarchic tyranny in 1776, America now suffers the abuses and […]

BRUCE THORNTON: THE LOST MEANING OF INDEPENDENCE DAY ****

http://frontpagemag.com/2013/bruce-thornton/the-lost-meaning-of-independence-day/ Independence Day is a time of backyard barbeques and fireworks, department-store sales and blockbuster movies, patriotic bunting and flying the flag––in short, a time of leisure and consumption, with a few obligatory nods to the momentous event that July 4 is supposed to celebrate. But as the years go by we have lost the […]

DANIEL GREENFIELD: REVOLUTIONARY TIMES

http://frontpagemag.com/2013/dgreenfield/revolutionary-times/ Each anniversary, whether of a marriage or a nation, is marked by the time and place that it finds us. Anniversaries are not static. A wedding anniversary that arrives during a rough patch in a marriage changes the way that a couple looks back at that original date. So too it is with nations. […]

THOMAS LIFSON: ON TEXAS AND FRACKING

http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2013/07/texas_rises.html The gift of fracking has created vast new oil supplies, capable of making America energy independent in a few years, creating millions of jobs, powering economic growth, and crippling the power of OPEC and the Islamic oil producers. Such attention as has been paid to the fracking boom has focused on North Dakota, where […]
