JERROLD SOBEL: MORE “PIECE” TALKS

For the second time in a week, Israeli and Palestinian officials are scheduled to sit down in Amman Jordan, and agree that each sides position on a peace agreement is antithetical to that of the other.  Israel, represented by an elected, constitutional government whose decisions will be binding will face off against a non-elected, self appointed cabal of “leaders” which have exceeded their term in office by two years, have no ability to make decisions of war and peace and represent no one other than themselves.  Propped up by the Obama Administration, whose motives are likewise dubious, Abbas and his Palestinian Authority (PA) are the weakest of all the terrorist organizations which by the way, are adamantly opposed to even the most benign of talks.  Just today, longtime Hamas bigwig, Mahmoud Zahar made the following quotes in a Jerusalem Post article entitled, “PA should focus on Palestinian Unity, not Israel.”

“The changing factors around us are in our favor … they are not in favor either of Fatah’s project or those with whom it cooperates, including the Israeli enemy”….”It all depends on Fatah’s policy now,” Zahar said. “If Fatah wants the (unity) agreement to be accomplished, we will be ready. If they do not want, then we are sitting here and the future is ours.”  Much like our President, and even a cadre of self destructive, left wing Jews, he lauds the “Arab Spring” and sees the rising tide of Islamism as supportive of the Palestinian cause….And what might that cause be?

It certainly isn’t two states; one Jewish the other Palestinian, living side by side in peace.  Other than the “meshuganas” in the White House, who can argue with Zahar’s assessment?  Since last Israel was prodded to sit down with these thugs, a lot has occurred, unfortunately, none of it good for the West.  Turkey, under Erdogan has fallen into the Islamist camp.  Libya following the downfall of Moammar Qaddafi is increasingly unstable.  According to published reports, U.S. intelligence agencies are reporting  Libyan rebels, following a transitional period, are strategizing to subvert the secular elements and create an Islamic state.  Wow! isn’t that a shocker?  But not as shocking as the fall of the big enchilada, Hosni Mubarak.

Mubarak, a man  that for better or for worse upheld the peace for over 30 years; an American ally that had the rug pulled out from under him by Obama as did the Shah of Iran by another astute expert on foreign affairs, President Jimmy Carter.  In regard to Mubarak, Franklin Roosevelt’s quote about another tyrant of the 1940’s; Anastasio Somoza, holds true.  “He (Somoza) may be a son of a bitch, but he’s our son of a bitch.”

Now the United States is in a real pickle.  The Muslim Brotherhood, straining at the bit for years has all but taken the reigns in Egypt.  Israel’s 1982 peace treaty with Egypt and her relinquishment of the Sinai is based upon the defunct premise of land for peace.  As the guarantor of that treaty, one has to wonder what position Obama, or for that matter any other President will take as this treaty is almost certain to be abrogated somewhere down the line?  Will the United States, or should I say, can the United States, with cut backs in the military have the power or political will to force an Islamic Egypt to relinquish the Sinai? Doubtful at best.  Hypothetical you say?  This past week alone the Brotherhood and the Salafists took complete control of the Egyptian parliament.  Not one voice rang out in support of maintaing the peace treaty with Israel.

On Feb. 18, 2011, to a hero’s welcome, one of the most vehement anti-Semites in a sea of anti-Semites returned to Egypt.  Yusuf  al-Qaradawi, the “spiritual guide” of the Muslim Brotherhood shattered any illusions, or at least should have, regarding the “Arab Spring” and a maintenance of peace with Israel by his following pronouncement: “I have hope that Almighty Allah, as I have been pleased with the victory in Egypt, that He will also please me with the conquest of the al-Aqsa Mosque [i.e., Jerusalem], to prepare the way for me to preach in the al-Aqsa Mosque”….May Allah achieve this clear conquest for us. O sons of Palestine, I am confident that you will be victorious.”

Amongst other anti-Semitic, anti-everything diatribes by this hateful man, the following should have raised eyebrows in Washington but didn’t:  “Allah had imposed upon Jews “people who would punish them for their corruption. The last punishment was carried out by Adolph Hitler.”  By the way, with the same wisdom of a bucket of rocks, this is the same Qaradawi that Obama has turned to mediate the not so secret negotiations between the United States and the Taliban.

Taken collectively, as Israel sits down with the duplicitous Palestinians for more meaningless talks, what has she learned from her past experience with the “land for peace” canard?  For starters, this exanamate policy should rightfully be re-named “land for piece,” since Israel, piece by piece has relinquished land and has received nothing but greater hostility with each concession.  Her reward for unilateral withdrawal from Southern Lebanon was war and incessant rocket attacks from Hezbollah.  Her reciprocity for allowing Abbas’s murderous partner, Yasser Arafat a return from Tunis was two intifadas and a violated Oslo II agreement.  In 2005, Ariel Sharon, unilaterally ceded all of Gaza in a peace gambit.  For his efforts, for which Israel has never received any credit from the world at large, Jews living in cities adjacent to this hell hole are forced to live in bomb shelters.  And now the Sinai is soon to be next.

From the Palestinian standpoint, they thrive upon such talks. It’s right up their alley.  A religious contrivance called “taqiyah” allows a Muslim to quash agreements and treaties with all non-Muslims when it becomes politically advantageous to do so.  The Palestinians have been using this ploy successfully for many years and if Netanyahu allows them to, will continue to do so in the future.

The scenario, as always, remains the same.  Israel at the prodding of an American Administration lays all her cards on the table.  The Palestinians, for one excuse or another walk away, only to return at another time and use the latest offered concessions as the new starting point.  Netanyahu is sure to see this but the question remains:  Is he playing out the clock on what may soon be a one term, biased Obama Administration, or is he truly going to succumb to the pressures they have placed upon him for more “piece talks?”
