THE IDF’S NEW TOY: THE PINCHER A MINIROBOT THAT NEUTRALIZES IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVES

Mini robot fires pencil-sized projectile to burn up, neutralize IEDs

TEL AVIV — A state-owned firm is developing a robot designed to neutralize improvised explosive devices (IEDs).Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has reached an advanced stage in the development of its Pincher anti-IED robot. Executives said Rafael was meant to neutralize IEDs from a safe distance.

“This is a novel way to stop IED and mine attacks,” an executive said.

Rafael director Ram Fabian said the company was developing a prototype of Pincher. Fabian told the Defense Update Web site that the robot could turn operational in 2011.

Executives said Pincher fires a pencil-size projectile at the suspected IED. They said the pyrophoric projectile was meant to strike and burn the IED rather than causing an explosion.

This marked the second anti-IED system developed by Rafael. The company has already completed Thor, which uses a laser to destroy IEDs. Rafael has been working with the U.S. firm General Dynamics on Thor, which also uses a 12.7mm machine gun to dismantle bombs.
