MARILYN PENN: BEACH BUMS ****

It isn’t hard to find Jews who will identify with their enemies under the rubric of their allegiance to liberal thought.  Recently, there was the holocaust survivor granny who had sailed on the first flotilla and re-enrolled for this year’s aborted cruise.  She was concerned about the oppression of Palestinians in Gaza (high on the international list of politically correct causes), yet unconcerned about the fate of Jewish victims of Hamas missiles and terror attacks (high on the list of politically incorrect causes).  Jewish celebrities and entertainers will cancel their performances in Israel, yet perform for Arab leaders who believe in stoning women and homosexuals and killing Jews.  Jewish academicians, writers and artists will call for boycotts of Israel while ignoring the mass slaughter by Muslims of Africans and Asians and their acts of terrorism throughout the world.

In this vein, the New York Times correspondent Ethan Bronner reports admiringly about a group of Israeli women, fashioning themselves as contemporary versions of Rosa Parks who have been smuggling Palestinian women into Israel for a day at the beach.  One of the women cited is a pregnant mother of three whose family seems to be in the business of manufacturing terrorists;  five of her brothers are currently in Israeli jails and one was killed while entering a settler yeshiva with a knife.  It doesn’t require a huge leap to remember the recent slaughter of the Fogel family in Itamar, whose two young sons and infant daughter were butchered to death along with their parents.  Their killers were two Palestinian teenage boys from the West Bank, one of whom bragged that he was proud of what he did and would gladly do it again.  Does the first thing that comes to mind with this memory include the importance of giving the sister, wife or mother of such killers a chance to splash in the Mediterranean Sea?

Bronner refers to Israeli-Palestinian relations with the even-handed equivalency characteristic of the Times:
“no negotiations, mutual recriminations, growing distance and dehumanization.”  But there is no Palestinian organization equivalent to the Israeli women’s group known as WE WILL NOT OBEY.  There are no Palestinian women or men inviting Israelis to their homes, risking arrest for insisting that Hamas recognize the right of Israel to live in peace.  There are only Israeli women whose obsession is not with their fellow citizens of Sderot who in the course of a year were victims of 3 – 4 rocket attacks per day.  One woman has the audacity to liken the occupation to Nazi aggression against the Jews and prides herself on doing something to set herself apart from this savagery.  Instead of identifying with the innocent civilians killed and maimed by hijackers and homicide bombers, these women direct their compassion towards Palestinians who educate their children to hate Jews, who exalt the cult of homicide killings, who honor terrorists with parades and celebrations and openly admit that any peace agreement with Israel would only be temporary.

There is an American woman whose name comes to mind in association with these Israeli women but it isn’t Rosa Parks.  Unfortunately, it’s Hanoi Jane.
