The identities and nationalities of the men were not confirmed. One law enforcement source told the newspaper they were U.S. citizens, while another said they were of North African descent.

Authorities late Wednesday reportedly arrested two men believed to be plotting a terrorist attack in New York.

Officials did not immediately disclose what had led to the arrests, but WNBC reported that NYPD intelligence officers arrested the men during a sting operation where they tried to buy guns and grenades.

The pair are expected to be charged under the state’s terrorism laws and the case will be prosecuted by the Manhattan district attorney’s office.

The FBI, which usually investigates major terrorism cases, was not involved, according to the New York Times, and terrorism matters are not usually prosecuted in a state court.

The New York Post also reported that a Queens man was arrested in connection with a terror plot Wednesday night. The man, identified by The Post as an American-born Muslim with a record of drug arrests, was trying to buy a handgun and talking about attacking a synagogue.

It was unclear if the incidents were connected.
