WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE? MOSHE PHILLIPS

The March 22 lunch meeting in Washington, D.C. of the National Press Club’s Young Members Committee featured Helen Thomas.

It is hard to decide what is most outrageous: that the Young Members Committee invited Helen Thomas in the first place, that the National Press Club did not veto the appearance, or that the event did not generate the alarm and protest that it should have.

This was clearly a well-attended event and a friendly audience. Smiles are in abundance. As a caption on the website states:

Former White House Correspondent Helen Thomas and Young Members Committee Chairman Tim Young trade jokes at the beginning of the luncheon …

The event was called “Media on Tap” and Thomas is described as a “special guest” and the event was said to be “in her honor.”

What a tragedy for the Fourth Estate that things have come to this! Helen Thomas is a bigot and a hate filled extremist and that her fellow journalists should still hold her in high esteem and a special guest to be honored sends a clear message about why Israel rarely gets a fair deal from U.S. journalists.

Things like this seldom occur in a vacuum. A quick look at the recent history of the Young Members Committee reveals much.

A veteran Arab American political activist named Abeer Abdalla was Events Committee, Vice Chairwoman of the National Press Club in 2010 and is the 2011 committee chair. In 2009 she was the committee chairwoman of the Young Members Committee.

An older biographical sketch of Abdalla can be found online at http://www.millennialpolitics.com/abeerabdalla.html and contains a lot more information on her background:

Abeer graduated from The Islamic Saudi Academy in Mt. Vernon, Virginia. She holds a dual-diploma, a diploma from the Ministry certifying a formal education in Arabic Language and Islamic Studies instruction…

Abeer … got involved with Congressman Davis’s re-election campaign through the Arab-American Institute of Washington, DC. Jim Zogby, AAI’s President also urged Abeer to get involved personally.

What’s more, Abeer does not appear to be a working journalist. According to the website of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters she is their “Communications/Government Affairs Associate.” And that sounds a lot like a lobbyist. How did she gain membership to the Club?

It seems that the National Press Club and National Public Radio have more in common than posh Northwest Washington addresses – they both need to be exposed for their penchant for anti-Semitic extremist rhetoric.
