Mosque Developer Clams Up

He was asked if he will meet with family members of those who were killed on 9/11.

Sharif El-Gamal, the developer of the so called “Ground Zero Mosque,” would not answer. In fact, when reporters asked him that question, he turned around and walked out of the room.

He was a guest of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg at a dinner marking the Muslim holiday Ramadan at the Mayor’s official residence, Gracie Mansion, though Bloomberg lives in his private home.

Daisy Khan, the wife of Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, who is behind the project, also attended the dinner.

Reporters tried to ask them questions about the project but they refused to comment in detail beyond the brief statements they gave after the dinner supporting the project and Bloomberg.

El-Gamal said he is honored and blessed to be an American and a New Yorker.

Their host, Bloomberg, supports the project, saying not building it would compromise our country’s effort to fight terror with freedom.

“Islam did not attack the World Trade Center – Al-Qaeda did. To implicate all of Islam for the actions of a few who twisted a great religion is unfair and un-American. Today we are not at war with Islam – we are at war with Al-Qaeda and other extremists who hate freedom,” Bloomberg said in his remarks.

Nearly 100 Muslim leaders and city officials attended the dinner.

But across the street, as the Mayor spoke, a handful of people stood against the project.

Protestor Marion Dreyfus held a sign saying “This Mosque Celebrates Our Murderers.”

Dreyfus told Fox News, “In history, for the last thousand years, every time Islam has come to a country that celebrates a different religion, if they have conquered it or in some way managed to attack it, and prevail, they have established a mosque over the place that was conquered. That has happened in Turkey, that has happened in Spain, that has happened in Israel, and it appears to be happening here.”

Meanwhile, there was a new show of support for the project Wednesday. A group of religious leaders, activists and some families of 9/11 victims are calling for it to be built. They said they support religious freedom and want to push back against what they called the strident tone of some of the critics.

El-Gamal has previously told Fox News that he has no plans to move the project or abandon it, and Daisy Khan has said she hopes for peace and healing.
